17-year cicadas

These are some pictures of the 17-year cicadas that came out this year. It will not happen again for another 17 years, but there are other cycles in between. You can find out more here. You can read about our experience in North Carolina here. These were all taken in our backyard.

I love this. We have cicadas (or is it cicada?) anyway, we have a ton of them but they're green. I could swear that they come out every year, is THIS the genus that appear only once every 17 years? Either way, I love them. It just wouldn't be the same without the friendly little buggers.
