Thank you Petite Chose & Niels! I just understood how this works. The black part represents the night, the orange one the twilight, the "yellow" the sunrise/ sunset and the blue the rest of the day. There are 2 sets of numbers, from I to XII to mark the hour. The small circle shows the zodiac and we were at the end of Virgo. I wonder if the sun and moon overlap when there's an eclipse...

@Kylejones - of course you haven't seen that before, the King that commissioned this marvelous clock ordered the craftsmen to be blinded after their work was completed so that they would not build a similar piece of machinery in another country. What a selfish guy!
