Against Banned Books (Please Spread This Pic & The Text)

Book Banning is such an awful thing,... parents who want to care for their kids challenge books and then... they perhaps ar banned... Banned Book week is a great celebration... celebrate freedom of speech and press is what they want to say... and these parents who "care" for their kids i cant understand them... they let them watch tvtvtv and play violent videogames but books shall be difficult? weird ^^

“Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech.” — Benjamin Franklin

“Without Freedom of Thought, there can be no such Thing as Wisdom; and no such Thing as publick Liberty, without Freedom of Speech.” — Benjamin Franklin

“Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us." — Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas

I created it coz of the book-banning-hype in America (see capture).
Didnt you hear of it. i gonna post a comment...

Wow, great job on creating that sign Flo. I wouldn't have guessed it was a fake image.

The topic you are talking about is quite a dynamic one.

There are people with extreme views who believe books should be banned, and people that don't. Unfortunately there is no easy answer.

I personally think that the books should be available and that parents should read any book they think might be questionable and decide for them selves. Then if they decide to let their children read it, they can ensure their kids get the messages they believe they should.

Pixie & LS: You are correct, American attitudes concerning morality are schizophrenic. This probably comes from our mistaken egalitarianism concerning ideas -- we give similar consideration to ALL points of view and a fractured moral climate is one unexpected consequence of this noble, if misguided approach.

Scary scary scary! Keep your hands off of my books! Neo-cons are scary.

As for the photo, there are a few things that make it just OK. The sky is blinding for starters. The sign is hard to capture on its own because it's an odd shape. So, you'll need to pay attention to the other things in the frame.

Double moral is not just an issue in the USA. It perhaps is something typical of most of the Christian countries that were not greatly influences the the Reformation. For example, I was told that the Pope, Ratzinger, is against the Harry Potter books and that he even burnt some of them.
Of course, this is just my hypothesis.

That has to be the greatest sign i have ever read.

As for the photo, I would have to say that the framing is a bit off. You should have framed the shot square center to highlite the sign, which I believe was your intention. The sky is blown out, but I don't think that matters since you probablyl didn't want to sit and wait for the lighting to change just for this shot.

As for the zing, I really like it. Speaks louder then the message on the sign.

Your photographic skills (I had a quick look in your gallery) are exceptional. How long have you been taking photographs?

About this on: Banning books is the biggest joke I have ever heard about in our modern multi-multi-connected world. Please, let everyone make his/her own opinion; I feel offended regarding my intelligence if my country would do such a thing (the only book that is banned in the Netherlands in "Mein Kampf", sensitive subject...)

Sooo, for the rating: I like the idea, though it is not completely clear to me without description. I thought it was about THE book. Also, the quality of the photo is less than most of your other pictures. Make sure to post your better ones!

I just wanted to let you know that I used this picture for my blog, pirathecaire.com. As you can see if you visit pirathecaire, it is a French blog, so if my comment is not clear, blame it on my poor English. ;) For your information, as you may not read French, pirathecaire is a blog about librarianship.

On my blog, if you roll over your picture, you will be able to read the «title» of the picture. I use a standard phrasing for each CC picture I put on my blog, that could be translated by something like «Picture created by [your name] under a Creative Commons [type of your license] license.» Your picture is also linked to its page on your flickr gallery, so the readers can track it back to you.

    Thank you!

I came across it by (happy) accident when I was writing on the subject of book banning. Seriously thank you!
