This was taken on the 10th day out of Washington DC on a coast to coast road trip. Somehow it represents everything that those American road trips are supposed to be. I have been coast to coast twice, and have done many lesser road trips in the USA - but I live in New Zealand.
A coast to coast road trip going west tells you more about American history and culture - both for good and ill - than just about anything else you can do.
I didn't expect this shot to get much attention. It is highly personal. I underestimated how much the emotions that I attach to my own photograph are part of the American psyche. Well -- that's my interpretation of why it has done so well on flickr without having a cat or a naked person in it. Perhaps it would do even better if I tagged it for that nude female skateboarder with her cat in her backpack that you just can't quite see on the horizon.
The photograph was taken in 1996 with a 25 year old Pentax SLR that has since died and was scanned before I began playing with Photoshop, so asoriginally posted it was unmodified just like it scanned. It was modified by reducing noise on 6 January 2006
