the perfect martini

real martinis have citrus twists.

lime is best.

orange will do.

a drink with an olive garnish is some other, inferior, drink -- not a martini.
this particular cocktail glass is called a "martini glass".

not just any drink in this shape of glass, though, is *a martini*.

martinis are made with gin.

drinks in martini glasses made with vodka are just that: drinks made from vodka, in a martini glass.
this is gin.

it is very delicious.

it is very delicate.

james bond was wrong -- do not "shake" your gin. always stir it.

note that it is cold enough to frost the glass.

that's because it is well-made.

James Bond always orders a Vodka Martini -- Shaken, not stirred. James Bond was not wrong, you are. Get your sources straight before you criticize. A gin martini is not shaken traditionally, if it is, it's called a Bradford. However, it's really at the discretion of the connoisseur how to have it prepared, or, in your case, the ignoramus. Furthermore, the typical or "classic" martini is "gin-based" which means it's not always gin and vermouth. Accepted in contemporary culture, if you order a 'martini' anywhere in the world (yeah, the world), you are likely to be served a vodka martini unless the area you're in is gin-dominant or you remember to specify gin.

just because something makes its way into popular culture, or become "common knowledge", does not mean that such a thing is "correct".

i am NOT wrong --- i am perfectly right.

i am also the final authority on such matters, so it matters not who disagrees with me.

Ouch, sounds like I hit a nerve. Don't you hate it when you're proven wrong? As a professional bartender and drink aficionado, I can assure you, you certainly have a lot to learn. Take the time and read a contemporary bartending book and you'll appreciate all the intricacies that go into creating a perfect martini, and not just one by the book. Go to an unknown bar in your city or neighborhood and order a martini just to see if you get served exactly what you have described in your poorly written description of perfection.

Sheesh, what a douche.
Anyway, I always use a lemon twist, as the subtle aroma and flavors excite me. However, I'm gonna go with a lime today (and not only because I am out of lemons), once my 3:30 4 O'Clock Drink Time rolls around.

Also, I always use Sapphire - that's just what I buy. Sorry man, feel free to berate me at an absurdly inappropriate level.

badthang, as an amateur bartender and drink aficionado, i can assure you, you certainly have a lot to learn. take the time and read what i've said about tanqueray vs bombay, and you'll note that teh saphire blows goats.

i mean, honestly, where did you get your gin info? highlights for children ???

Get this straight (especially Chez7) .... a martini is made with Gin. Period. The Bond movies sold out to Smirnoff for money. Get over it. Tanqueray is still the foundation Gin, but Hendrick's has been a pleasant surprise.

The glass needs improvement, but I agree that a Vodkatini is an abomination.

yah, the glass is merely OK --- i can not, yet, afford truly great martini glasses.

i have, though, finally ordered a new battery for my camera and will take photos of some great wiskey sippers.

from my experience dealing with bartenders, i would have to say that saying "i am a bartender" is the best way to lose credibility, fast, when talking about martinis.

bartenders make a living by being *nice* and givng potential tippers what they *want*, not by being obnoxious and correcting them on what is and what is not a martini makes.

soon enough, bartenders believe their own sold-out style hypocricy and will call any old drink in a triangle-shaped glass a martini -- even if it has chocolate in it.

it's nothing personal, it's just that i happen to be correct -- that's all.

thanks for the compliment on the photo though !

I make mine with one shot Blue Sapphire and two shots Skyy Vodka well shaken with what ever is around for a twist. It does the trick.
