one. ugly. monkey.
this is the aye-aye. and it's one ugly thing.
i should point out that i did NOT take this photo -- i found it online, and wanted to blog about it and so i put it here so that it would not one day dissapear w/o notice, and break my link.
as pointed out by mv4 below, it seems likely that this photo is from bristol zoo gardens, in the UK
UPDATE (6 Mar, 2007) --- oh, snap, there's a youtube vid of the baby aye-aye

Umm, if I actually think it's cute, do I have to visit the eye doctor?
It does kinda look like it might suck your bone marrow if given the chance...

A photo is not a thing divorced of its content. All the technique in the world can't make a photo unless it has content of some kind. And content like this is SO striking, SO exceptional, that the technique pales by comparison. So I disagree with the theory this is a bad photo. It's certainly the photo I've sent to most friends, that causes the most consternation when seen, and challenges our very conception of our relationship with animal life on earth.
I'll be shocked if this doesn't become an internet meme. There are other photos of these on the web, but this is the one I'd see taking off if a site like Fark.com or SomethingAwful gets hold of it.
Update: Ok, author blogged this photo, so maybe it is a meme. But I hadn't seen it before.

one of my friends questioned whether the image was fake, so I had to find 'proof' that a baby aye-aye does in fact look like that

I believe the source of all these baby aye-aye photos is Bristol Zoo Gardens in the UK.

awesome! -- i have been trying to track down the original source.
thanks.

is it weird that i new exactly what it was from the thumbnail? haha, i watch animal planet religiously. the adult aye-aye isn't as crazy looking as the baby...but, still crazy looking.

awwwwe, I think it's cute: novelty factor; Einstien hair; huge ear to head ratio; innocent pose; and curious, if not somewhat deranged, looking eyes.
In all life there is beauty (and cuteness), it all just depends what paradigm you see things from.
Imagine how ugly us hairless up-right walking primates look to other creatures! Yet ... my kitty thinks I'm adorable :D

This little creature is from Madagascar, if you Google it you will see what it looks like as an adult, while its still unattractive it looks better than this, not so scary looking anyway, poor thing. It looks like it was in the middle of morphing when someone one interrupted the process, too much imagination I suppose.
chris.corwin (66 months ago | reply)
yes, i am very familiar with the aye-aye, thanks.
no google required.
and i know it's a leemur, not a monkey.
as douglas adams points out in my favorite book of all time "last chance to see", the monkeys almost killed the lemurs off entirely, and now the world's most successful monkey is trying to save it.

Some Madagascan even eat Aye-Ayes. Hmmm... hunt and eat Aye-Ayes... doesn't look like they have ANY meat on them in the first place. If you grill them do they smell & taste like chicken? Anyone up for some Aye-Aye Soup? Or perhaps... (I just can't resist saying this...) some Aye-Aye & Dumplings?
Ok Ok.... I'll stop already. :-)
