St. Peter's

St. Peter's by flash of light.
Pirton, Worcestershire
Removed from the rest of the village, on higher ground stands this church of norman origins, with its half-timbered tower.

Beautiful light! The church looks interesting. The half-timbered tower appears to be an unusual feature. Are such towers rare?

They are Christinel, although there are a few examples around here. They are known as forest churches as i suppose this was the origin of the building material, although the forests are now all gone!

Interesting construction, the tower looks like an afterthought.

It was an afterthought! - it's a relatively recent addition, being only medieval, whereas the rest of the church is Norman :-).
It replaced the original central tower which is thought to have collapsed. Don't know if that was in the middle of a service though!

Must have been a mighty sermon to bring the roof down like that ;-)

Gorgeous image
This design of church seems to be a Marches / West Midlands feature, there are several similar in Shropshire

Thanks Jim. I shall have to have a closer look in Shropshire, as I have not seen that many around.
