Queen Elizabeth II Planetarium

My favourite building in Edmonton, hands down. (The full sized version does it a bit more justice.)

A short bike ride from the house I grew up in, the (disused) planetarium became the understated focal point for everything from my mid-80s summer computer camps to melodramatic university love affair reconciliations to -30C asteroid storm watching parties.

It was the first civic planetarium in Canada, and was visited by the Queen in advance of the public opening in 1960. It's a rare example of modernist architecture in Edmonton, and quietly captures the public optimism and enthusiasm for science of the day.

I'm not sure when I'll see it again.
