Libya's revolution
An air-strike hits Ras Lanuf on March 8, 2011.
From 15 February 2011, a series of protests escalated into an armed uprising in Libya, as people demanded an end to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's 42 year-long rule and the installation of democracy. Eastern Libya, centred on the city of Benghazi, became "free", and the base for the opposition forces.
Battles throughout the country, but focusing for several days around the towns of Ras Lanuf, El-Brega and brought the Gaddafi forces closer to Benghazi, until the passing of a UN resolution authorising a No Fly Zone to halt Gaddafi's advance. At the time of writing (March 18, 2011), the country was still in a state of virtual civil war, with Gaddafi adamant that he would not cede to the protestors demands.
