Um golo de Jardel, ao cair do pano, permitiu ao Benfica vencer o Toulouse, por 1-0, no jogo de apresentação da equipa encarnada aos sócios e adeptos.
O jogo poderia até ter terminado sem golos, mas o tento de Jardel, apontado aos 88 minutos, veio trazer justiça ao resultado e premiou a boa exibição das águias, especialmente na segunda parte.
Os primeiros 45 minutos mostraram um Benfica superior ao adversário mas nem sempre esclarecido no ataque, dependendo muito das iniciativas de Nolito. O extremo espanhol foi um autêntico quebra-cabeças para o sector mais recuado do Toulouse, tendo espreitado o golo em duas ocasiões.
Jorge Jesus operou várias alterações no arranque da segunda metade, apostando, entre outras, nas entradas de Gaitán, Jara, Saviola e Enzo Pérez.
O quarteto argentino emprestou outra dinâmica e acutilância ao futebol da águia, que colocou a defesa francesa em constante sobressalto.
O jogo disputava-se em sentido único – o da baliza do Toulouse – e o ascendente encarnado acabaria por resultar em golo a dois minutos dos 90, por intermédio de Jardel. Antes, porém, Pentecôte gelou as bancadas da Luz, desperdiçando uma soberana ocasião de golo na sequência de um contra-ataque rápido conduzido por Paulo Machado.
