Yup... Two strobes, softbox, brella, silver reflector and two pieces of foam core. Poof... you got yourself a nice little light box.

Put the camera on a tripod and that's the output. The adjusted white balance and contrast, a bit of unsharp mask added for good measure.

I love that lens, partially, because it is the only lens I currently have for my 20D. But I still like it a lot. I just ordered the lens hood for it.

I just sold mine about a month ago, I liked the lens but it wasn't fast enough for me. I wanted the shallow DoF and the better low light performance that an f/2.8 lens could give me.

That said it's just about the best walk around lens for taking photos, it's light has a good range and good optical quality.

I'm now rolling with the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens, which is much heavier and isn't as wide, but the images it produces are jaw dropping.

Ohhh yea... that would be nice to have a 24-70mm L lens...
I just can't justify spending that much money on a lens right now, though.I need too many other things, namely a new comp. :-P

Yeah it was a lot of cash to drop, got a bonus and had to blow it on something...

I'm older now but still have my youthful/kid tendancies... So I now am able to buy the dumb/crazy stuff I could never afford when I was younger.

It's a whole different lens. The 17-85mm is lighter and has a wider range and is a better general walk around lens. I miss it at times when I'm stuck lugging the heavy 24-70mm around.

That said the 24-70mm is amazing and is bolted on 80% of the time now. And as heavy as it is, it's a light weight to the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens I just got which is like taping a brick to the front of your camera body.

Very nice picture indeed. I've always wondered why some lense hoods are tulip shaped. Although they're estetically nice to look at the actual lense they protect is round and any hood should be cone shaped, right?

As for weight I'd love to give both the 17-85 and the 24-70 one a try, comparing it to the 70-300 IS I recently picked up.

What else do you have for sale? I need a flash, hood to the 18-55, remote and of course - lenses :).

@Broken Haiku:

Nothing for sale at the moment, both this lens and my Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX lens sold very quickly. A good flash is key, I don't use mine a ton but when I need it it's wonderful.. I'm using the flash more and more in the sunlight for a 'fill flash' to take harsh shadows away from people in the sunlight. As for lenses, it's an addiction that is hard to stop.. Also better lenses result in much higher quality photos, lenses also keep their value... the bodies loose theirs.... So buy the best quality lenses you can afford.

The 17-85mm lens is much, much lighter than the 24-70mm (and costs less than half of what the 24-70mm costs). For a walk around lens on a crop factor camera it's hard to beat.

Pedal Shaped Hoods: Not exactly sure why some are tulip shaped and other's aren't... I know that lenses which have 'rotating' front elements need the cone shaped hoods because the end of the lens rotates. Non rotating lenses are the ones that can have the tulip shaped hoods. The hood is designed primarly to reduce/eliminate lens flair, protecting the lens is secondary...

Thank you fenster, I was just looking into what lenses to get after this one, and I can't really decide on one Probably a macro as the next thing.

The reason behind the tulip shape really interests me, I will look into this and let you know if I find out.

I think the tulip shape is because you're frame is square. The corners are getting more of the field of view so on wide angle, the round hood would cause vignetting. The lens is round and the aperature is round but the chip is square. That's in my opinion the reason for the tulip hood. Throw a round hood on your wide angle lens and you'll see what I mean.
The corners will get rounded off.

How is the image quality of this lens?

It's decent, not "L" quality, bute. perfectly usabl It does have some serious distortion at 17mm, but other than that, it's quite reasonable. The IS works great, but it is only f4-5.6, so it's definitely not a low light lens. If you want an all around decent walk around lens, that's a pretty good option, or if money is no object, look at some L glass.

@TS Photography: It's somewhat subjective and depends on your needs are... for my needs it's unacceptable. Optically it's not where it needs to be, and it's a really slow lens (I don't want anything that doesn't at least give me f/2.8), but I'm pretty demanding... I think the deal killer for me reccomending this lens is that it's not cheap and you can find I think a better lens for equal or lesser money.

This lens is all about compromise, it's not fast (at f/4-5.6) but it has IS, it's not wildly sharp but it's noteably better than the kit lens and has a USM ring focus motor, it's got a pretty good walk around focal length range, but it's not nearly as nice as an 18-200mm lens which now Canon finally offers (but the Canon 18-200mm is crap, the Nikon 18-200 blows it out of the water).

I think it's a fine walk around tourist type lens, for a person who wants a decent lens that works well in good lighting. Of this mid-line EF-S level lenses (10-22, 17-85mm and 17-55) this is the weak performer, the 10-22mm is stellar and the 17-55mm is pretty good. I personally think they should have used this lens as the new kit lens (and no as the 'upgrade kit' lens), and then make a better 18-200mm lens that has this type of build quality, features, etc. and sells at a price point that competes with the Nikon offering.

I would only reccomend this lens if you wanted a more range, and cared not about having a larger aperture lens. The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 is a better lens in most regards, and costs less than the Canon 17-85mm. So for me the best bang for buck lens is the Tamron 17-50mm...

@dview: I find that IS is not that big of a deal... I have nine different lenses that I use, and only one has IS (70-200mm f/2.8) and there is only one additonal lens that I own that I would like IS on (the 24-70mm)... Since IS only helps with camera shake and does nothing for subject motion blur, I find IS to be helpful at times but it's not a massive improvement for me unless I'm shooting long.

That said with video on the MkII IS becomes a BIG deal as you want to have IS working all the time at almost all focal lengths.

Do you sell your lenses online? I would like to buy some used L glass but worry getting some grey market lens.

@LIVINALITTLE: I do, but I haven't sold a lens in a long time...

I also have bought glass online, never had an issue... but I should say that used glass often times doesn't cost that much less than new glass.

...but why worry about if it's grey market? USA vs. International warranty is all that there is, the lenses are exactly the same and Canon isn't going to refuse service on an international lens.

Do you just buy and sell on Ebay or is there somewhere else? I guess my worry is that Cannon wouldn't take care of you as well on a Grey Market Lens. I guess I also worry that I am not getting as good of quality or even a copy cat that isn't a canon lens at all. The price point of the grey market ones seem way low so it makes me wonder.

@LIVINALITTLE: Well I think you need to seperate things a bit... Buying a USA vs. International version of a lens (which by most accounts in the United States is the definition of 'Grey Market') is one topic, buying a lens from no-name retailer offering a too low price is something all together different. Lastly, buying a used lens online is yet another topic and has it's own concerns. So make sure you think of them differently because they are different things.

1.) Buying USA vs. International... I already answered that above.

2.) Buying something online: Canon (and other companies) have wholesale prices and the more a retailer buys of a given product / brand the lower the price they get. The largest camera retailers in the USA (and the world, I think) are B&H Photo Video, Adorama and Samy's Camera, and get the best wholesale prices... so they can sell their gear for less than other retailers because they pay less for them. So if you find a price on a specific piece of gear that costs more than 10% less than they sell it for it should be a good clue that the price is scam or that something is fishy (I'm talking new camera gear here). Beware of most every online retailer out of Brooklyn or New Jersey, almost all of the online scam stores are out of these two states.

... I don't know if I have ever heard of a company selling a counterfit Canon lens, ever that's a new one on me.

3.) Buying used: All of the normal buyer beware risks definately apply to camera gear. That said I've bought and sold a number of lenses both online via eBay as well as 3rd party sites like Photography on The Net which has a pretty active Canon buy/sell forum. In short: Know your gear, Know what it should sell for used in a given condiition, Know something about the buyer (check feedback).

Thanks for all the great information and advice. I know all to well about the scams out there. Unfortunatly this was from experience. When I bought my camera I got caught up in a Ebay scam and lost $480. I should have known better and now I am wiser and unfortuneatly gun shy. I will definatly try B&H and photography on the net. I guess it was more the term "Grey Market" that kind off scared me.
