UPDATE: This is an old photo my camera line up has changed a LOT... Click Here to the new rig.

A quick snapshot of the main components of my camera setup. I decided I needed a photo of the family all together (the occassion was my new Canon 10-22mm f/3.4-4.5 EF-S ultra wide zoom lens).

Photo taken with my Canon Digital ELPH Powershot S400, it's old but it still is quite functional and has been to hell and back and still takes photos without question.

Which zoom, the Canon 10-22mm? I've only had it for about 2 hours but in a few quick test shots it was most impressive.

That said I thought you had a 10-22mm?

...scary. I'm on my way to a similar collection.

Instead of the 35mm I went w/ the 28mm.
Instead of the 24-70 I went w/ the 24-105 f/4.

@ZeeDesertRat: Yeah for me the f/4 speed was a deal killer on the 24-105mm (I shoot a good bit in lower light conditions), so 24-70mm it was... As for the 28mm, I would actually probably perfer to trade my 35mm for the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX, it's better optically, has HSM and is a full stop faster (f/2 vs. f/1.4), not to mention it's a tad wider.

I think my kit is pretty balanced... The only things I'd do would be to add the Canon 1.4x tele-converter and the 85mm f/1.8 to the collection. But right now I'm really pleased with my collection of glass and the photos they give me... If I ever end up shooting weddings I'll likely pickup the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro, and perhaps a fisheye...

Again scary - have peeked at the Sigma 30mm (and the 35mmL as well for that matter).

I use the 24-105 during the day - hiking, walk around, etc. Decided I wanted the reach over the speed in that case.

@zelig2: Well yeah kinda, I have a few specific ideas/needs for this lens. I thought about renting it, but decided I would buy and then sell off if I didn't like it. But now I'm DEFINATELY cut off.

Change the 20D to a 1D
and the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 for the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8
and the 580EX to a 380EX
and the 50mm f/1.8 to a 50mm f/1.4
and then take away the 35mm and the 10-22mm and we'd almost have the same kit! :D

How do you like the 70-200mm IS Zoom? I have a 75-300mm zoom which has been great but am looking for something with IS.
Posted 41 months ago. ( permalink )

fensterbme  Pro User  says:

@8230This&That: Image Stabilization is great for telephoto lenses, where camera shake is a real issue. I don't like IS when it's used (or people think) it will mean that it performs well in low light, because IS doesn't do a thing against subject motion blur.

As for the 70-200 part of the lens, it's just jaw dropping and is kind of the standard by which all telephoto zoom lenses are judged.

Canon sells a 70-300mm with IS and USM now. I also think the glass might be a bit better...

Nice collection. Slowly, but surely I'm hoping to add to my collection. I was contemplating the 35mm canon prime but I hear the 30mm Sigma is good as well .. hmmm .. decisions decisions.

fensterbme  Pro User  says:

@Seren Dipity: The Sigma 30mm is a better lens, better focusing, faster (f/2 vs. f/1.4) by a whole f/stop, all over a better lens. Only downside is it's digital only, but that doesn't bother me one bit... I was tight on cash when I bought Canon 30mm f/2, it's a nice lens but not outstanding...

cool set up there... we almost have the same set of lenses too... except the 35mm, and my 50mm is the f1.4 version... im thinking the next purchase would be the 16-35 2.8L... but need to make some $$$ first. :)

@marianofriginal: Thanks, I love this setup.... I'm not terribly happy with the 30mm f/2 but it's nice for the money (the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 would be nicer). I will likley upgrade my 50mm when I go full frame, which is when I will likely buy the 16-35mm f/2.8L with a 5D.

I expect to do that within 6-12 months... I'm hoping to start making money here in a few months and when I do I will need a second camera body. So I'm in the boat your in, no more gear really until you make some money with it.

Is the Elan 7 the same as the EOS 30? And if it is, is the battery grip worth the purchase? I'm using an EOS 30 with a 17-40 L, and I wonder if the grip wouldn't make it a bit sturdier... problem is fitting it in the damn bag...

Mmm... Nice shot, too - lots of kit shots look dull, but yours looks lovely. The 35mm f/2 is lovely. I'm about to sell it, alas.

fensterbme  Pro User  says:

@scribeoflight: Yes, the EOS30 is also the Elan7... My Elan came with the battery grip and I don't like it as much as I do the grip on my Canon 20D, etc. but I do like having it there... It balances the weight out a bit better on some of my heavier lenses, and continues to allow me to shoot portrait style the same way I do on my 20D...

Thanks for the compliments on my gear shot... they are kind of fun to take from time to time.

Mmm, I'll look into it... although the more I think about it, the less I think it is a good idea, for me - the bag would become a nightmare.

Thanks for taking a look at my stuff, too. I'm having a bit of a black and white kick, right now, but there is some interesting colour work floating around, too.

I'll explore your 'stream more fully when I have a moment.

how do you like the 50mm f/1.8, i'm looking to buy a new lens. a multi-purpose one
Posted 33 months ago. ( permalink )

fensterbme  Pro User  says:

@deeREK: The 50mm f/1.8 MkII I own I have a love/hate relationship with... I have gotten some good photos with it, but it's built like crap, it sucks to manually focus, is loud as a buzz saw and hunts pretty bad in low light.

That said for the price it's totally worth it and is a great first 'prime lens' to buy. It's multi-purpose (portrait work, street stuff, low light, etc.) but find it too tight on a 1.6x crop factor camera and as a result I use my 35mm f/2 for low light work and street photos... but more often than not I use my 24-70mm f/2.8L (I use that lens for about 80% of all of my shots).

@▪¦N.S.F¦▪: Canon's are fine... use what you want. As cool as the gear is to play with it doesn't matter nearly as much as most people hope... it's what you do with it that matters.

If you had a one choice over your 24-70 mm and your 70-200 mm which one would you pick ? and please tell me why .
Posted 22 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

fensterbme  Pro User  says:

@dennislopez74: That would be pretty easy, my 16-35mm f/2.8L MkII. Why, because it fill out the wide end of things and offers a perspective I can't cover with any of the other lenses. Increasingly I find that my 16-35mm is on my 5D a lot of the time (this is partially because I need to buy another 24-70mm so my wife and I don't fight over it). The ultrawide shots can really capture some wonderful dramatic stuff that you can only really get with a really wide lens.

Aside from that lens I'd lkely want to keep my 50mm f/1.4 but it would be a toss-up between the 50mm and the 100mm macro, but the 50mm would take it for the overall usage it gets from me and the really low light funcationality.
