Some people are Gay. Get Over It.

Some people are Gay. Get Over It. by Carlo Nicora.
He was walking with the others, carrying the poster I have used to title this photo and the entire set: "Some people are gay. Get over it."
He was not in the first row, under the flash of every photographer. He was in the middle of the parade, one amongst many others, one carrying the sign of Pride. I have always appreciated his interpretations on the big screen.
Sir Ian McKellen was there, telling the world that being gay has nothing to do with sickness, psychological problems or anything vaguely similar. He was there to show the world that homosexuality is something normal, something to be proud of, something that should never be addressed in a negative way!

I have decided to name this set "Some people are Gay. Get over it!", following one of the billboards proudly carried by the people in he parade and sharing the idea that homophobia is bad.

I wouldn't say that being gay is something to be proud of, in that same way that being straight is not something to be proud of. That implies the being gay is something special, it's not, it's normal. It is the way you are, as simple as that.

Great photo though.

@gnasheruk: IF homosexual people would be treated like everyone else I would subscribe to your point of view. Unfortunately there are still a lot of road to go before they are completely accepted. I have seen discrimination, bullying, violence against them, therefore I do not agree with you: there must be information, the media must cover these events because they have a message inside. Being proud mean that they want to be able to do whatever they want with their sexuality, without being treated in a different way!

gnasheruk  Pro User  says:

@Carlo: While I agree with you that bullying, violence and discrimination is a terrible thing in any society, people standing up saying 'hey look at us, we're different, we're special' only breeds the kind of disease that homophobia is. I personally couldn't care less if someone is straight, gay, bi, black, white or pink with polka dots. The thing that makes me like or dislike someone is attitude, and you can't judge that until you know them.

@gnasheruk: I simply see it from a different perspective: We are what we are, and we are not shameful, but proud. We are no different from you and we deserve the same rights you have
It is a small but significant difference in my opinion!

@gnasheruk: it is fine to differ! Different points of view generates a multidimensional vision of the same things, therefore add interest to every discussion. :D

@crazycrazy: I would never set Sir Ian McKellen and me in the same sentence as you did! Thanks, I am honored!

Thanks everyone!

Well done Carlo! Nicely written and a grea capture of a great face.

@gnasheruk: I can understand what you're saying, really I can. But, and its a big but, the reason communities celebrate something is because they have triumphed significantly over a previous oppression. For example, this is the same reason that there is a London (and other) carnival every year.

A shot worthy of Shakespeare of the greatest stage actor of our time.
I see not just Sir Ian, but MacBeth, and Lear and Prospero.

How wonderful that we live in a world that can produce such a talent who also happens to be gay.

well it's not that WE are wanting special attention.. "hey look at us!!! hey we are special HEY HEY HEY!" LOL that's just silly...we are marching because we WANT what is EQUAL.. what is RIGHT... what is HUMAN!! I guess it's safe to say that if we DIDN'T march, then no one would hear us... so in that, don't translate it as, WE WANT this or WE WANT that..LOL give us equality ...give us our civil rights.. give us the chance to marry and see if it's for us...and proudly i can say, that because police officers used to come into the Castro and beat us JUST FOR FUN and kill us...hmmmm, JUST for fun, then yes... our marches, our yelling is not to be taken as we want special needs... we want you to leave us the FUCK ALONE>..for str8, white men, you've never been oppressed... so it's easy for you in your unpained, unstrained life to say or judge from the outside... relax... sit back.. enjoy... let US march all we want without your commentations on the side... we have every right to WANT... look what WE have been thru :) WINK hugs to you all
