DAY 8: Fives?

“Snakes & Ladders” is a game that most of us have played at one time or another, it’s a time honoured board game where players must avoid the snakes and try to land on the ladder squares. It’s down the snakes and up the ladders, in pursuit of the final square which brings victory. Variations on the game are “chutes & ladders” where the snakes are replaced by chutes which unlucky players fall down when they land on their square.

It is generally agreed that John Jaques (Jaques of London) was responsible for originally inventing and producing the game we know today as “Snakes & Ladders”. Where the game originated in the first place though is the subject of a considerable amount of controversy. Some speculate that the game can be traced back to the second century BC, a game called "Dasapada", though this claim is hotly contested by a number of historians who state that "Dasapada" is more related to chess.

Whatever it’s origins “Snakes & Ladders” has been loved by children all around the world for generations. Sadly, like so many board games, “Snakes & Ladders” is being challenged by computer games for popularity. Our little boy loves playing “Snakes & Ladders” and we feel certain that our baby girl will similarly enjoy playing the game when she is older. “Snakes & Ladders” is a game the whole family can enjoy together.

Note: image taken with two Canon 580EX flashes, one on either side of the subject. Canon 5D mounted on a Manfrotto 055CB Professional tripod, released by cable. Focus done in advance on the red counter so that when the dice fell on the same line I would be able to count on them being in focus. Dice dropped over the Snakes and Ladders board and shutter released as they fell. Hundreds of images were taken, few chosen. We were very pleased with this one in particular because the two fives appeared just right like this.
