Romantic Rose

Romantic Rose

Note: image taken with a Canon 5D mounted on a Manfrotto 055CB Professional Tripod - subject lit using natural light from a large window to the left of the flower. The weather was overcast diffusing the light. I angled the rose so that the light from the window produced rim lighting on the edges of the petals to ensure that they didn't merge together. The shadows on the other side were opened up with a large white reflector.

New Processing Method: processed in Adobe Camera RAW 4.3.1 & Photoshop CS3 using brand new methods which we have recently developed and this has resulted in a rather unique look to this red rose. If you compare this red rose with some of my others you will immediately see the differences. These new processing techniques have been specifically developed for red flowers.

- Image came second in the "RED, RED & RED!" Flower competition on the 4mazinGorgeouShots Flowers group during February 2008.

- Image chosen during February 2008 for the Excellence in Floral Photography Excellence Hall of Fame II.

Daffodil

Daffodil

Spring is my favourite time of the year. Everything comes to life after being dormant during the winter months. The trees regain their leaves and these new greens seem much more vivid than at any other time of the year. Also the spring flowers arrive and paint the landscape with a myriad of glorious colours. Daffodils are wonderful and always seem like heralds of the spring time. Here is a beautiful bright yellow Daffodil freshly picked from our garden.

Note: image taken with a Canon 5D mounted on a Manfrotto 055CB Professional Tripod - subject located in a very large light tent, lit by two Canon 580EX flash heads and fired by a Canon Speedlite wireless remote transmitter ST-E2. RAW image processed in Adobe Camera RAW 4.3.1 & Photoshop CS3, using an A3 Wacom graphics tablet.

British Sweet Peas. Image taken in a large light tent and lit by two Canon 580EX flashes. One positioned to the left, just behind the position of the subject and the other flash above the camera to the right.

I purchased these flowers at the local Waitrose store, which always has nice flowers, with long stems and without the damage to the petals evident on so many shop sold flowers these days. I like to leave them overnight before taking images so they can settle down. Whenever I take images of flowers straight away they always look like junk.

- Chosen as the Flower of The Month on the Language of Flowers group during April 2008.

Delicate Beauty

Delicate Beauty

Image taken in a very large light tent. Deep pile black velvet provided background, covering the back of the light tent and the floor (black velvet covered the vase, hiding it from view). Two Canon 580EX flashes provided the lighting, one at the left and behind the flower and the other at camera level fired through the front panel of the light tent.
