Thanks all. The angle and perspective is pretty much a result of the fact that these archways are massive and the letters are probably 30-35' above.

Here's a photo of the entrance to the Library of Michigan for an idea of the scale.

It is a very cool complex (I'll post some more photos when I get a chance) and I really encourage anyone who's never been to go there and check out the museum for a real look at Michigan's history.
