Leaving Albion

Heading home in Sunday's blizzard on M-Whatever-it-is out of Albion. As you can see, the plows had not plowed, so we soon backtracked to M-Something-else.

Yep! The snow was so deep though that we were up to the frame!

Thanks! It was a pretty scene - I much prefer the picture to the reality though.

Just be sure your AAA is paid up so someone can pull your out! ;)

I don't live all that far out of Albion, so I'm trying to place this. Can't...

Either way, we sure did get blasted here, huh? Next time you're swinging through this area, let me know and we can hook up for lunch or something. :)

Classic winter Michigan shot. Love it....the photo that is. I wouldn't want to be dredging down that road.

A great picture. Had it been me in my station wagon, we would have been stuck but good.

We really got bombarded in Jackson. Usually we don't get it as bad as every one else but this time there was no escape. It took the plows forever to get out on the roads.

      Very nice capture!

      M-99.

Why were you in Albion? I live in Albion, so I sort of wonder why anyone would come here, not that it isn't totally awesome and all, but still.

Nice atmosphere and film-like grain. Have a happy holiday, Andy!

Seen in my contacts' photos. (?)

I dunno... if it were me, I'd just stay put...

this is so moody... i love the feel of it. however, i know driving in it isn't a whole lot of fun!

I wish I could. When I get down there my sense of direction flies out the window. Magnetic rock probably. It's not far from Albion College's guest house (?) I will totally let you know when I'm coming down!

Yeah, it's one of THOSE kinds of scenes for sure.

Back in the day, I had a Country Squire station wagon. We went out on New Years Eve "drift busting" in similar snow. We did bottom out.

      Thanks cubed!

Probably maybe 99. I was of course there to see the home of the famous Jamelah. ;) Actually, my mother-in-law and father-in-law live there, right by the sledding hill at that park. Albion always makes me sad. It has great bones but it's so starved that you can see them. I keep hoping there will be a resurgence but it seems to languish. There is a cool bookstore though!

Happy holidays to you to Richard!

Yeah, they seem to be all over the state. A conspiracy I think.

Staying put was a thought, but then I'd have been even further behind the holiday 8-ball!

Thanks. For a "through the windshield" photo, I think it did pretty well at capturing the scene.

What a great observation you make about Albion, my friend. Great bones ... a friend of mine lives just south of there and every time we go to lunch at the great Mexican restaurant there, we ponder when it will be that Albion makes a mini-revival. All the pieces are being put in place ... I think it will happen one day. Then it will become a little more like Marshall, the town 10 miles to the west of Albion.

      (great bookstore). :)

As an Albion resident, I love your picture and your Albion comments. It beautifully captures the sense of snow, winter, Michigan and a weekend storm. Fortunately we remained housebound watching movies and waited for the shovellers and plows to come along and get us out. You weren't so lucky. If not 99, must have been 60. For sure all those M- roads do look alike.

looks familiar! the subject is quite nice to look at but seems to cause me and my econo car much unneeded stress when encountered... michigan!

    18. farlane (66 months ago | reply)

Thanks Annie. I'm pretty sure it's Albion Rd. We were going to Concord (which ended up being a 1.5 hr round trip drive!). Housebound was probably the way to go.

Yep. In the summer I feel a little silly with a big old 4WD car ... that feeling goes away 4 months out of every year.

Nice shot. Sounds like a bit of a white knuckle drive but isn't it beautiful. Some eco-zealot types might look down upon those who own one but high clearance 4WD vehicles sure are nice things to have if you have to navigate in some parts of this state this time of year... lets see one of those zealots maneuver through this in their Honda Civic.

This photo is featured in Absolute Michigan: The Week for December 30, 2007 (our new video program).

I think Wolf Blitzer is probably safe for now...

Shots like these are exactly how I remember growing up in Michigan. Even now, when the snow is making so many people angry and wishing for spring I look at a shot like this and ask why? It's gorgeous out here! Michigan winters are full of some of the most beautiful scenery. Spring will be here soon enough, for now winter is my muse :)

    22. farlane (64 months ago | reply)

I remember this too - wish we saw it more often. I can't understand snow making you angry if you live in Michigan. That's like someone in LA getting mad at traffic.
