Greet the Golden Hour
We thought if we walked north a bit and then came back, the light would break the clouds. We were more than right.

They look like they're watching the sunset.
farlane (70 months ago | reply)
Yeah. I don't know if its anthropomorphism or design, but they definitely appeared oriented towards the water.

I just read the title of this photo. Was it titled before? Let's just delete my dumb comment then. ;)

Let's just say it wasn't.

You know it! My hat is way off to the creator(s). Strange to say it's one of the most impressive sights I've ever seen.

What in the world was this for? We just got home today from "up north" on the other side, near Alpena, and saw a sunrise, but no sunsets (ofcourse) over a big lake. This photo REALLY draws the curiosity out of the viewer.

Here is an old postcard of the beach at Frankfort:

I think it was just for the sheer joy of creation, but I wondered too what motivated this level of work.
That is one heck of a postcard. There's a ton of fashion going on for sure! The sculptures are (were?) located up at that point.
Ken has his photos up now - here's a slideshow of our photos

Absolutely amazing. Some of those pilings look like they defy the basic laws of physics - were any of them glued or mortared in some way? Art for the sake of art - thanks so much for passing these on Andy.

I've seen similar moundings near the ruined goldmine at Bushiribana on the island of Aruba. Many 100's of people add to these over many decades. Pagan origin? I'm not entirely sure but I think you're supposed to have good luck (longer life, better sex?) if you take the trouble to build one each time you visit. So, it's v. unlikely that any one person slaved for weeks/months creating these....
farlane (70 months ago | reply)
I think you're correct, beosheep. I heard yesterday that someone made a number of these in a rock bed and then passers-by apparently added to the collection.
I'm interested to see if it becomes a tradition - would be a neat tourist attraction in that it forces a 1 mile walk and welcomes participation.
Thanks everyone for your comments and favorites!

I love this..and hoping that they spread southward. .
lake.sider (70 months ago | reply)
Heading that way soon :-)
farlane (70 months ago | reply)
Thanks Yolande!
That would be cool indeed Diane. Since it appears that they "jes grew" from an initial seed, I can't see why some unidentified beachwalker couldn't spread the virus southward ... or north ... or other directions I guess.
;)
Do me a favor, lake sider, and let me know if they're still there! They're right about a 1/2 mile from the Frankfort Pier.
(fyi, I live an hour north of Frankfort and haven't been back since I took these!)
Phoenix828979 (69 months ago | reply)
How long did THAT take to set up ? =)
farlane (69 months ago | reply)
I'm guessing "really long". We spent about 1/2 hr on Good Harbor Bay and managed 15 ... with most of them being 3-4 rock stacks.
farlane (67 months ago | reply)
Update. They are spreading.
BloomCreatives (67 months ago | reply)
Spreading more : ) This grouping is in Sedona, AZ.
