In the Michigan Immense Public Park

In the Michigan Immense Public Park by farlane.
Downstream: If you care about Michigan's water

Thank you Supreme Court for preserving the Michigan Immense Public Park.

This is a photo from the Lake Michigan shoreline on Pyramid Point. While this beach is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, all the Great Lakes shoreline in Michigan is freely accessible. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy walking to any beach access and then being able to hike for miles upon miles in either direction.

Here a thread talking about what other folks love about Michigan.

Part II where I fool with this photo a little bit

Great shot! The girl on the shoreline really gives perspective to the immensity of the sand dune. Yes! Isn't it great that all of the Michigan shoreline is accessible for walking! I too am very pleased with the outcome of this decision!

It's gorgeous.

The point the photo is taken on is called Pyramid Point and the sand cliffs away in the distance are Whaleback. They mark the south & north ends of Good Harbor Bay. Much of that is in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore but even in the areas where there are houses, you can walk on by.

Me too! I was on the beach last weekend and (when the wind wasn't blowing) it almost felt like summer was here.

What happened to the beach? I worked as a camp counselor in Northport years ago...on our days off we'd spend the whole day at Pyramid Point. Back then there was about 40 feet of beach but today it seems like there is a lot of erosion.

Thanks for taking me home again Andy.............great shot, I too am happy the park went through. It would be condo's from Frankfort to Northport if it hadn't. My family members lost their homes to the park and we were upset then, but all in all a great decision. My uncles home was the Ranger Station near the canoe livery on the Lower Platte for a while.

I'm visiting the USVI as I write this and can't help but compare the two. I love the wonderful length of our beaches and the fresh water, but looooooove the warmth of the water here!

The beach kind of ebbs and flows, John. A ways back from where I took this I recall a 60'+ wide stretch.

Well all you have to do is jump in the car - right Jim?

You're right, Kathy. The creation of the park was an unpleasant and often painful process but the result is pretty spectacular.

Lucky you get to have both, Carol!

This Picture would be a wonderful addition and you’re welcome to add other pics from the lakeshore.

Cheers!

Dear Friends,

I work with an organization called Save the Wild UP that is trying to raise awareness about a risky process called metallic sulfide mining (MSM). MSM has polluted 40% of the watersheds in the west and is poised to enter Michigan, a stone's throw from Lake Superior. If you've ever seen photos of what this form of mining has done elsewhere, it can break your heart thinking about what it could do in Michigan.

The wonderfully talented Daisy May Erlewine has given us a powerful song called A Letter from Downstream to help us raise awareness (and money) about this threat to Michigan's water.

We've created a group called "Downstream", and if this is something that you want to help with, I'm asking you to add just one photo that shows why Michigan can't afford to risk our the health of our water. We'll be displaying a slideshow of photos from this pool along with her song at savethewildup.org.

Thanks so much,
-Andy

That's what I love about Michigan's shoreline, all that sand beach. There are only a handful of dune sites on the Wisconsin side. I grew up a mile from one.
