"Photography at High Speed: A
Historical and Contemporary
Exhibit"
Featuring the Winners of the Annual
Photography Competition
ORGANIZED BY THE MILLARD SHEETS CENTER
FOR THE ARTS AT FAIRPLEX
"You can't depend on your eyes if
your imagination is out of focus."
-Mark Twain
You can't depend on a camera's eye
either, without the photographer's
imaginative certainty in framing each
shot. In this exhibit's photographs,
even the transience of moving subjects
displays a certainty and authority over
the photos' individual contextual
spaces. Whereas the blurring of people,
automobiles, and other subjects in
motion was a handicap in the 1830's--the
early years of photography--the long
exposure blur has since become an
aesthetic preference, particularly in
emphasizing high-speed activities. This
year's competition and exhibit
chronicles the capturing of movement,
both physically and figuratively,
through daguerreotypes, stereographs,
pinhole images, Polaroids and digital
photos, among other processes.
Interpreting five different competition
categories--Physical Movement,
Photojournalism, Abstracted Movement,
Active Illusion, and Movement Through
Time--the artists sampled not only
techniques, but also styles and subject
matter from various periods in
photographic history. The exhibit also
presents a brief historical survey of
photography with original artifacts and
still- resonant, iconic images. Whether
mischievous or earnest, dependable or
questionable, these photographs
entertain the humble objective of
entertainment, a point certainly not
lost on the many pioneers of the medium
from pinholes through pixels.
