Well it definitely looks interesting. I'm not quite convinced that I want all of these tool in my browser, but I am definitely interested to give it a try and see what I think.

My personal take on "alternative" browsers in general: as long as they're based on a well-supported and well-behaved engine (read: Gecko or WebKit), then I'm all for them. The more the merrier. :)

Why make a "new" browser rather than a Firefox extension?

Anisotropic: I know. :)

Digitalcorpose: Not my place to answer, but it sure looks to me like the capabilities in Flock and considerably more complex than your typical Firefox extension. It's really a whole different concept in browsing. I suspect the concepts would have been difficult, in not impossible, to represent properly in a simple extension.

Counter-question: why does it matter? If I'm understading everything correctly, Flock uses the Gecko (Firefox) rendering engine, and supports Firefox extensions. It seems to me like there's not anything you can get out of Firefox you can't get out of Flock. So, if you wanted the Flock features, what would be the problem with switching to a new browser? I guess I just don't see why it matters if Flock is a new browser or a bunch of hacks for Firefox -- the end result is the same.

Jeff has it right. We toyed with the idea of just doing browser extensions back when Flock was known as Round Two. At the time we wanted to really push the limits of extension design but found that it was really quite difficult to craft an iPod-like user experience across the whole browser just building individual extensions.

I love Firefox and definitely want to see it succeed -- Flock's success depends on it! But we also recognized that for our users, there's a lot that you just couldn't do with Firefox extensions to create a fully integrated read-reply workflow.

Flock is certainly an ambitious undertaking and we have every intention of not only working with Mozilla but also contributing to their source tree. We've been in stealth mode for a little while now to build up our concepts and featureset and to iron out the bugs that are bound to be introduced given the scope of new ideas that we're baking into the browser. Over time I think it will become clear why making simple extensions just wasn't an option given our dedication to providing a rich, excellent user experience.

I hope it's fast and not as buggy as FireFox for OS X. It looks promising though.

Alright, Joe, you're a Flickr nut like the rest of us, do how much of your experience with the UI here bled into Flock?

The "drag stuff here to blog it" trick sounds wonderfully user-friendly and oh so Flickr (okay, Web 2.0 in general).

Quick question about the screenshot btw, that bar with the blogging info, can you slide it up and out of the way or close it? Because it looks like when you're not using it, it could get in the way.

ASurroca, you can close the blogging info bar at the top whenever you are not using it, yes. Think of it like a sidebar in Firefox now, open and close it as you please.

Just curious...

Why not use the unified toolbar for Mac OS X? It seems to be the new "preferred" window style -- plus I think it's prettier (and pleasing me is very, very important to you, I'm sure). :)

Unified toolbar? You mean like in Mail.app? Well, that's actually how we had it, but the Toolbar Collection Selector kind of necessitated a *very* slight delimiter.

We may rev this in future versions though. ;)

Yeah, like Mail.app. Also like NetNewsWire and a few other popular apps.

I'm not sure what the "Toolbar Collection Selector" is, but I'll take your word for it. Certainly not a big deal, I just think the unified toolbar/menubar looks nicer. :)

I definitely am looking forward to flock while embarking on my web2.0 experience.. I mean yeah you can if you want get most things from plugins on firefox, but here we have a team of developers writing and fitting all the web2.0 freindly plugins for you with QA as a package! I have had frustrating experiences with loading too many plugins crashing firefox in the past.

Hi there, wise webguys!

Well , I for one love Firefox very much, BUT, asides from the frustrations mentionned previously by fellow- surfer "OMIEE" about the "plug-ins-crashing" syndrom that most of us users encountered more than twice in a month (in my case anyways...), i presume; there iS this-one-other-thing that REALLY saddened me about our dear FF browse-machine: the zo0OMming function! Which operates the text material ONLY.. . .

Granted; it is more (or just as) versatile and supple than its mozy-netscapy-or-otherly "counter-part(ner?)s".
BUT; when one finds oneself trying to visually decypher, say, a geographical map, a text in JPEG, GIF (or whatever format you will...) not to mention , last-but-not-least, to put a NAME on that tiny grinning face in the background of the family portrait at aunt Ozzina's birthday pow-wow,(could it be your nephew or what?)!
No do, firefox won't give a clue; unless there's some new plug-in I didn't hear about addressing that annoying itch aforementioned. but then again it makes the whole browzette-shebbang "heavier", footprint-wise, on the more "modest" (and thus easily encumbered...) PC units such as this one I presently own and use to compose'n'send this small piece of prose, hic ünd nunc... . . .
So I find myself using that Opera (7.54) browser, 91% of the time now and, leave alone the zo0OMming topic, at least I can rely on a Linux-friendly "fureteur" with many an innovative and intelligible "widgetry".

Right next then, here I read 'bout this Web 2.0 thing.
Wo0Ô0oW! guys; i ain't never even heard of the stuff yet, but i "sho'nuff" shall jump right in, skull-first, to join and share with that budding new Flocky tribe.

(me+say) = (me+DO) .. . .
turcotte,
wishing you "Ze-best-in-Ze-webst" (or sump'n like Zat)!

FactoryJoe, I tend to agree somewhat with Jeff Croft above ... though not sure if this can be developed as an extension, but why not add features to Firefox. FF usage has grown over the years. As of Jan 2008, the usage stands at 37% for FF and 55% for IE. I am so lookin fwd to see the numbers reversed! Now why dividing FF users again? Why not make a better FF itself?
Well, I guess I am little too late on this discussion anyways ...
