OAuth token

OAuth token by factoryjoe.
Hmm, a fairly literal mockup for the OAuth logo... I don't think I'll go in this direction, but the idea came to me clearly, so I thought I'd mock it up.

The inspiration is, of course, a bus token of sorts.

I don't know, make the A more of a keyhole in a fence and I reckon I'd go for this. Nice work, Chris!

What's weird is that my brain wants to parse the bottom as "H-Auto"
Maybe that's just me tho.

I like this direction a lot. Keep exploring it. I like Lachlan's idea too.

how about the rubber stamps or wristbands you get when you go to a club? permission to enter, leave and return. you're oAuth'd.

@Lachlan: I don't understand... how so?

@kentbye: whoa me too!

@philwolff: good idea...! That'd be hard to communicate visually, but I'll give it some thought.

I had a scale challenge with this: my first impression was of a manhole cover.

instead of repeating the name on the bottom edge, how about explaining it? "Open Authorization"

@philwolff: another good idea... originally I was thinking EST 2007 but I was like, "Um, yeah right." I agree that repeating OAUTH doesn't make much sense.

just as a note; that this resembles a bus token is probably only obvious to valley folks. i'm guessing oauth will work internationally too right? :)

@factoryjoe: The first concept I came to when I wondered how you could take this further was to rework the 'A' and the cross-hatching to look like more literal interpretations of security: a keyhole and a wire fence.

The 'A' looks reminiscent of an old-school keyhole. If it's possible to make that association stronger while still maintaining the 'A', I think that'd make for a great representation of what OAuth will offer: access into secured areas

Just a random thought...

@tizzle: this is old style of bus token is somewhat universal (for places that had public transit at least):

@Lachlan: good idea...! I did want to stay away from security imagery just because it gets really geeky really fast... we also contemplated keys before, but again, that's a different kind of literal that might freak people out since there's so much paranoia about phishing and whatnot.

I'd rather use the image of a valet key honestly. It really is probably the best metaphor for OAuth that we've come up with.

I like the idea but I think it's too busy and might not scale to small sizes.

How about a design without the crosshatching and "oauth" text so the circle is closer to the punched out A. I tried mocking it up but it looked like a star trek star fleet logo.
