Inspiration as commodity

Spoof -- you should read the fine print. This is the first time I've tried HDR, and I found that places like this with extreme dynamic range are still challenging.

Politics of property.

Where's this tunnel? Old Donner Pass maybe?

This is Mueller tunnel, in the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. It was planned as a segment of the Mt Lowe railway in the early 20th century. Here is a link from Wikipedia, photo circa 1896.

Sadly, the Echo Mountain House shown above burned down, and Lowe (and the railroad) fell into bankruptcy. The tunnel was built by the Forest Service after WWII.

Neat. I knew about the Mt. Lowe railroad but didn't know there was a tunnel. I'll add it to my list of things to do in LA.

Cool. I added it to the map. The tunnel is only about a 5 min walk from the road. If you continue for another mile or so, the trail goes to the top of Mt Lowe, where the views are spectacular on a clear day (winter or during the Santa Ana winds).

Whoa, very awesome, this is a transformative event!

I have been wanting real topo maps forever.

The hiking-map companies (like Trails Illustrated) tend to sell only heavily hiked areas. The USGS--the real surveys for all the hiking maps--is expensive.

Your maps, the ACME maps are free -- woohoo, where shall I hike next!?

Everywhere!

I like perusing the topo layer looking for lonely black dots indicating old structures out in the wilderness. Usually something interesting there to visit.
