How bats work

How does a cricket bat, tennis racquet, or baseball bat work? It acts as a go-between, helping your body to transfer kinetic energy and momentum from your moving arm to the ball. As Rod Cross points out in his superb book on Physics of Baseball and Softball, for efficient energy transfer, the ratio of the mass of your arm to the mass of the bat needs to be about the same as the ratio of the mass of the bat to the mass of the ball.

This photo is from our forthcoming article on the science of sport. I spent ages trying to get a decent motion blur shot and this was the best I could manage!
