Jupiter by Laura Travels.
Another night shot at Joshua Tree... only this one is much, much later. Some time in the middle of the night, my daughter woke me up to tell me that the moon was gone so i could get better night shots of the stars. She was so right. stepping out of the tent i just couldn't believe how many stars there were!! The whole milky way was just glowing before my eyes! That really bright one in the middle... is it Jupiter?

If you view it large, you can really see the star clusters which is my favorite part.

Laura Travels  Pro User  says:

Thanks everyone!!!!

Here's how I got the shot - I had no tripod (since I'd broken 2 on the trip so far and wasn't near anywhere to buy one) so I went wandering around the campsite looking for a good rock to sit it on that would come close to a position that seemd like it might have a good composition.. but since it was so dark, I was really just guessing. the great thing about joshua tree though is that just about any shot will be great because of the awesome boulders.

I set the aperature to 4.0, the shutter speed to 30.0, and the ISO to 1600. The focal length was 18.

The glow on the horizon obviously wan't visible to me (lights from the nearest city) but was a nice surprise.

I adjusted the saturation slightly in ps afterwards.

that's pretty amazing low noise for an ISO 1600 shot - if I tried that with my camera it'd look like the TV screen from poltergeist. Nice photo - it reminds me of the song "crooked teeth" by death cab.

Years ago, when I was in basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, I was pulling guard duty way out on the back forty of the base. I remember it being so bitterly cold that night, but I also remember it being the night I saw more stars in the sky than I had ever seen before or since.

Great shot. :-)

Computer Science Geek  Pro User  says:

@Felipe Borém: Trust me, it's Jupiter.

Jupiter is currently in opposition in the constellation Ophiuchus which is just above Scorpius and Sagittarius. Scorpius is on the right and Sagittarius is on the left. You will never see Venus on the southern horizon.

Wow, what a gorgeous shot Laura!

I had seen some similar glowing night skies with such a lot of stars on my trip through Arizona and Utah last June.
It's really amazing how clear the sky is there, in Europe this is hard to find. I saw such a sky only on a mountain tour in Austria at 3500m / 12000 ft elevation.
