The Cleanup - Liuzhou Flood 2009 by Expatriate Games

The Cleanup - Liuzhou Flood 2009

A Liuzhou retailer begins the arduous task of removing ankle deep mud from the garage under his shop. You can see the high-water mark along the back wall. I took these photos last month but I'm just getting around to getting them posted.

I greatly appreciate everybody checking in on me. I am actually doing fairly well with the disappointing exception of not being very motivated to take photos!

I've hit a wall of some sort. I've not liked anything I have captured in months. Seriously, not one shot. On top of the creative slump there has been a lot of weird stuff going on with my health. Every time I think we have it figured out it seems something else happens.

Of course there are the ever infuriating issues with The Great Firewall that periodically pop up as well. More of an annoyance than anything serious but still... annoying!

I think I actually needed the break...

Unperturbed - Liuzhou Flood 2009

This boy and his grandmother were out surveying the damage. The boy's house was underwater but you couldn't tell it here. Kids are amazingly resilient.

Maybe Tomorrow - Liuzhou Flood 2009 by Expatriate Games

Maybe Tomorrow - Liuzhou Flood 2009

Another grandmother takes her young grandson home after checking on their apartment. The water was receeding by this point but not enough that they could get inside and begin to clean up. She shrugged it off, saying "Maybe tomorrow... ".

Flooding here is fairly common. The Liujiang usually leaves its banks at least once a year. This year was the worst in many but nobody ever appeared to be overly concerned. True to form, they all did what needed to be done. It only took about two days to get everything cleaned up. It was almost all done by hand.

Liujiang River - Liuzhou Flood 2009 by Expatriate Games

Liujiang River - Liuzhou Flood 2009

The flooded Liujiang River flows past Liuzhou. This was a few hours after the peak. Those trees across the river are not small. Many apartment buildings were flooded up to the third floor. Taken looking from the south bank of the river near the Number One Bridge.

Maybe Tomorrow 2 - Liuzhou Flood 2009 by Expatriate Games

Maybe Tomorrow 2 - Liuzhou Flood 2009

Mr. Zhao looks at his flooded apartment, wondering how long it will be before he can get inside. He was mostly concerned about his television and air conditioner. He told me all his furniture was "rubbish" even before the flood! At the peak three hours earlier, there was water where he is standing.

A little more about Mr. Zhao on my China blog.
