Ralph and Pat
Folks, meet Ralph and Pat. We were stuck at the third mudslide on our epic "shortcut", when I saw this guy pushing his bike through the mud up the hill, followed by this woman. Ralph and Pat are in the process of cycling from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. They're from Colorado, so they're used to the hills, but those bike are also carrying about 100 pounds of gear.

We were here for almosttwo hours while the crew made the road passable. Some enterprising young vendors appeared and started selling snacks. They became our source of food over the next few hours of this journey.
Uploaded on May 10, 2008 OmenThis was an omen of what was to follow, as we headed out on the dirt road "shortcut" from San Cristobal Verapaz to Sacapulas. This 30km stretch of dirt road ended up taking us about 5 hours to travel, as we dealt with cave-ins and mudslides that were caused by the rainy season starting back up the previous night.
