How can one tell they have the smaller one? What are it's dimensions? I have a client that got a 15.4" MBP just a couple of days ago, fresh off the delivery truck.

You don't need the dimensions to figure it out. The new one is square when you look at it from the side, the old one is rectangular. See engadget's previous article on the new and old adapters for a side-by-side comparison shot.
