GIOVE-B is the second of ESA's two Galileo In-Orbit Validation Element demonstrator satellites for the Galileo, Europe’s own global navigation satellite system.
Galileo will provide a highly accurate, guaranteed global positioning service under civilian control. It will be inter-operable with GPS and GLONASS, the two other global satellite navigation systems.
The first experimental satellite, GIOVE-A, was launched on 28 December 2005, and GIOVE-B was launched on 27 April 2008.
