Woodland understory - reptiles - Marbled Gecko

Woodland understory - reptiles - Marbled Gecko

I am fascinated with these reptiles and was very excited to discover this one under some loose bark on the lower trunk of a large woodland tree. I'm guessing they are inactive for a lot of the year in Canberra with the very cool to cold nights. This one is vertical on the trunk and facing downwards, with me taking the photo from underneath. There is only one other species of gecko in the Australian Capital Territory and I hope to see one of those one day (or night).

Woodland understory - amphibians - Crinia signifera

Woodland understory - amphibians - Crinia signifera

A rare outing into the grassy woodland at night and there were frogs calling all over the place. The area had over 40mm of rain a couple of nights before so the creeks had lots of water sitting in pools. And that's where these two were. A great photo opportunity. I was mistaken by the markings and thought they were Limnodynastes tasmaniensis but Heleioporus steered me in the right direction. From listening to calls over the past few years, this species of frog is the most common in the grassy woodland. It is known as the Common Eastern Froglet. What's going on here - are they mating?

Eucalyptus melliodora - close-up of the adult leaves and flowers on a tree in a new park on the edge of the new Canberra suburb of Forde, bordering Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve (street name unknown as it doesn't yet appear on Google maps).

Can you spot the bees?

A perfect example of a woodland tree - the canopy is almost as wide as the tree is tall. You can see the natural woodland environment, of which this tree was recently a part of, beyond the fence.
