Rolex-21

The center was abuzz with vibrant energy on a sunday afternoon - students lounged on bean bags or sat in chairs or leaned against glass or columns, in groups or alone, studying, relaxing, conversing. The noise and chatter of the cafe faded quickly as one went up a slope and around the corner to the library section (even though no walls! - justification for the dull gray likely-sound-isolating carpet). It was mesmerizing to just watch people crisscross paths, disappear under the concrete underbelly or over the apex of an slope, as I wandered aimlessly in the interior. After reflecting somewhat, it became clear that SANAA's rolex learning center is not what architecture necessarily should be - in detailing (many strange structural compromises, and elements already in disrepair), function (not an efficient building by any means), or even form; it's not a building encumbered by a need to be responsible or sensible, instead it really is what architecture could be, as an imaginative environment to be inhabited, haphazardly, informally, joyously.
