Happy All the Time

Happy All the Time

"He felt swarmed by detail: her look, her hair, her body, those sheets, that French toast, the memory of that formal tea tray and naked Holly pouring tea into his flowered cup. He badly needed a change of context. He needed to get Holly on his turf, if only for a little while. He wanted to see Holly feel strange in his apartment... The sight of Holly sitting in his chair would put the cap on the reality of her, once and for all." --Laurie Colwin, Happy All the Time

The Kama Sutra

The Kama Sutra

"We shall now speak of love quarrels. A woman who is very much in love with a man cannot bear to hear the name of her rival mentioned, or to have any conversation regarding her, or to be addressed by her name through mistake. If such takes place, a great quarrel arises, and the woman cries, becomes angry, tosses her hair about, strikes her lover, falls from her bed or seat, and, casting aside her garlands and ornaments, throws herself down on the ground." --Vātsyāyana, The Kama Sutra

The Matisse Stories

The Matisse Stories

Breakfast consisted of an A. S. Byatt short story called "Medusa's Ankles" from The Matisse Stories, a moderately entertaining New Yorker piece on the Japanese mob, toasted crumpets with butter and lemon marmalade, a fistful of blueberries, and loose leaf Earl Gray just a tad over-steeped.
