I want to write him some fan mail now. Except I'm concerned that he'll be mad at me for putting all his book illustrations on Flickr without permission.
Lisa Randall's book Warped Passages was my first exposure to Penrose tilings and their applications to physics. In her very first chapter she comments that the crystalline structure of the nonstick coatings of frying pans has high-dimensional symmetry, though I don't think she mentions Penrose by name. That knocked me on my ass when I read it standing in the bookstore. I'm still mentally unpacking it.
