Licancabur is a highly symmetrical stratovolcano on the southernmost part of the border between Chile and Bolivia. It is located just southwest of Laguna Verde in Bolivia and northwest of Juriques volcano. The volcano dominates the landscape of the Salar de Atacama area. The summit crater is about 400 m wide and contains a 70 by 90 m crater lake, Lago Licancabur, which is ice-covered most of the year. This is one of the highest lakes in the world, and despite air temperatures which can drop to -30 °C, it contains planktonic fauna.
El volcán Licancabur hace frontera natural entre Bolivia y Chile. Se ubica entre la Región de Antofagasta y el Departamento de Potosí, en el costado norte del Paso Portezuelo del Cajón. Del lado boliviano, se encuentra la Reserva Nacional de Fauna Andina Eduardo Abaroa, con lo cual está protegido debido a que en sus faldas se encuentra la Laguna Verde que concentra grandes cantidades de Flamencos Andinos.
Licancabur é um vulcão localizado nas proximidades de San Pedro do Atacama. A ascensão ou escalada ao vulcão pode ser realizada, chegando no topo dos seus 5916 metros de altitude, com acompanhamento de guias locais especializados em alta montanha, pois é íngreme e considerado difícil sua subida. É um vulcão considerado semi-ativo; não há data oficial da sua última erupção.
