Under the Pier

Under the Pier

I ruined a perfectly good pair of boots getting this shot.

This is Clevedon pier, South West England, near Bristol. You can climb up some rocks adjacent to the pier to get underneath it and to the right. But learn from my lesson and wear appropriate footwear!

This shot is pretty much straight out of camera save for a sharpen. Canon 60D, Canon 17-40 f4 L @17mm, f11. ISO 160 1/50sec. There's a Lee ND soft grad 0.6 over the left half of the image and the Bristol Channel was really hazy, which helped to diffuse the sun (and hide Wales).

Clevedon Pier Long Exposure

Clevedon Pier Long Exposure

Taken last night at Clevedon pier. The relative calmness meant it was a nice opportunity to try some long exposures just after the sun went down. This is a 30 second exposure using a HiTec Pro ND3 (10 stop ND filter) converted in Silver Effex Pro to Black and White.

Ship Graveyard

Ship Graveyard

Took a wonder down to the Ship's Graveyard in Purton on the weekend. There hadn't been a cloud in the sky all day but unfortunately they came out just in time for sunset, which meant it wasn't as spectacular as it could / should have been. I also got there slightly later than I would have liked, which meant the setup was rushed a tad, and I missed the sun before it dipped below the clouds. Worth another visit I think!

It's a really strange area, littered with tens of boats from different periods. This particular boat was beached around 1909 but there are some boats there that were beached as recently as the 60s. This is a wooden hulled boat, but there are a number of concrete hulled boats as well.

"Who could possibly have known, following the intentional beaching of a small fleet of semi-redundant timber lighters in the winter of 1909, to strengthen the nearby eroding canal bank, that the Purton Ships' Graveyard would eventually number some 81 vessels and in turn represent the largest collection of maritime artifacts on the foreshore of mainland Britain today."

Surely you're joking...

Surely you're joking...

A bit of a departure from my normal landscape and seascape shots this, but a touch of the lurghi has kept me indoors feeling sorry for myself all weekend.

Anyway, this is one of my favourite books, the autobiography of Novel Prize winning Richard Feynman. A really interesting, irreverant, funny look glimpse at an incredibly interesting individual. There's a sheet of glass suspended above the book cover that's been coated with Rain-X and then sprayed with water to create the effect. It took a lot of trial and error to get the focus and exposure right. There's at least one more to come using the same technique but a different background. And I might experiment more tomorrow, time and lurghi permitting.
