4 Colour Sun Wheel

Back at work today. And it was dull, dull, dull. So of course I day-dreamed of land art. I wanted to bring together the experimental ideas I have been trying out recently. Colours, circles and sunlight. I wanted to take more care and be more precise too. Fortunately rhododendron leaves are robust and can take a little more abuse than the fresh new leaves but still I cursed every time I snapped a thorn or stuck one into the end of my finger.

We are fortunate to have a wonderful park in Lancaster, full of diverse plants, hidden nooks and crannies, sandstone outcrops and magical hidden corners. Unfortunately the windless evening proved popular with the midges too and they were really in their element nibbling my ears.

I seem to be blessed when it comes to finding the right conditions for photography. The light was perfect and the background quite striking and in a few short minutes I had some nice pictures recorded. The low evening light meant the high contrast look that I like was achieved without any post processing. These are just as they came out of the camera apart from a little cropping. Fortunate indeed. A few minutes later the sun dropped enough so that the wheel was no longer illuminated, I had arrived at exactly the right time.

You profit from leaves, very interesting compositions.Like the windows of the cathedrals.

It is amazing that this is all from nature. Although, If you think about it, technically everything we create is from nature. Still, using leaves like this is quite stunning.

Very nice colors indeed... and light through these leaves is very beautiful. Lovely ephemeral art...

      Thanks everyone.

Jack: I find it a real pleasure to know I have made something only with natural materials and yet it is colourful to the point where it almost looks like non-natural materials have been used. Real satisfaction comes from those self-imposed rules - no glue, string, nails or cheating allowed! But you are right those rules are somewhat artificial. Especially as the picture are taken with a digital camera and posted on a website. Are 1's and 0's natural?!

...re: sunlight...timing is indeed everything in life and art as well.
This lesson has hit home to me more times than I can count!

I found myself humming the tune to that old song "Lollipop" when I first saw this piece!

Ha ha, yes I know that tune. You'll be pleased to know that I now have it going around and around my head! But it is ok, I have infected my partner with it too. ;-)

Love it! (and trying not to sing lollipop!).

The objects / pictures with the colored leaves I like very well. Unbelievable what they are for an effect with the light received. Wonderful Inspiration makes me to try also .

      Escher-
Art is definitely all about setting rules. Even if you break them sometimes. I think that the general rules behind these land art projects are really wonderful and get people to think in a different way. As children we are accustomed to paints, glue, strings. But to create art and be the the sole manipulator of the raw materials (as opposed to a factory that makes the glue, paint) Is quite fulfilling.

As for 1's and 0's...They are merely a transfer of electronic pulses, harnessed from potential energy that already exists in the universe. Its amazing you brought that up, as I believe that when we can accept that nothing is really artificial, synthetic, virtual, however you want to put it, we can understand that reality is ours to manipulate to whatever extent.

This is still in the same bright flow as 'Dock leaf sun circle'. Guess you are my college on the search for the secret of transparant, radiating colors. Indeed, windows in the wide opening cathedral of nature...

What a joy your craft is to see..... to bring back (...or forward) all that is natural is completely refreshing. A big smile from me and appreciation for your creativity. I can see where this would be very addictive... can't think of a better addiction.
