2008 in words

2008 in words by erin m.
Yesterday: music. Tomorrow: movies.

Top 5 new-to-me books of 2008:

1. Samantha Hunt, "The Invention of Everything Else"
2. Cory Doctorow, "Little Brother"
3. Oscar Wilde, "The Picture of Dorian Gray"
4. Audrey Niffenegger, "Time Traveler's Wife"
5. Michael Chabon, "The Yiddish Policemen's Union"

Notes on 5 other miscellaneous literary adventures of 2008:

I don't dislike many books but for these I'll make an exception:
Sloane Crosley, "I Was Told There'd Be Cake"
Joshua Ferris, "Then We Came To The End"

Let's pretend I read this years ago, mmmkay?
Alan Moore, "Watchmen"

Should have been better but was still lots of fun:
Sarah Vowell, "The Wordy Shipmates"

Three years and counting, and I'm still on page 50; 2009 is the year, baby:
Luc Sante, "Low-Life"

I've read no. 3 and liked it. My reading material generally tends to be escapist fluff, though. Have you read 'Carter Beats the Devil' by Glen David Gold? That's my standard book recommendation to people. I loved that one.

Great shot of a typewriter! There's a relic from the past.

I haven't read that one, but I've had it in my hands a few times. I'm definitely one to judge a book by its cover, and that's got a great one.

No. 2 is pretty escapist and light. It's officially a young adult book, and it took about 2 or 3 days to read. I definitely recommend it. Obviously :)

And did you know there's a movie version of "Dorian Gray" coming out next year? Co-starring [gasp] Colin Firth.

No! I didn't know about the 'Dorian Gray' movie. That could either be really good or really lame. Colin Firth is generally a pretty safe bet, though. Cool, I'll have to give 'Little Brother' a try.

I started keeping a list around March, and that's the only way I could possibly remember. I wish I'd done the same for movies.

And No. 5 was my first Chabon, so I don't have much to compare it to. But yes, you should read it.

I'm in the midst of collecting my "books for 09" shot.
Chabon's "...Kavalier & Clay" will be making yet another appearance. Started it in 06 or 07 I think.

Gorgeous typewriter shot!

Brian, I bought a little Indy action figure with Henry Jones Sr. in the sidecar at Target last week. I thought about shooting that for the movie picture, just remind myself that good Indy movies can exist :)

That's funny, I actually didn't even see Mr. T's comment. I saw your music list yesterday and when you did another, I thought it was a good set together.

Jenn: Get the Lego sets; they're cooler and you can make a bunch of other stuff with them, like a Well of Souls and an Ark of the Covenant. And maybe you can put a lego piece under the microscope... ;O)

Erin: Just remember that quote of Lucas' about the proposed Indy 5 movie; "We'll make another movie if we get a good idea." I said it then, and I'll say it now: Good idea=Not making another movie...EVER.
