are you freaking kidding me?!

are you freaking kidding me?! by erin m.
And so it begins.

We have 118 days until the inauguration. I think the Capitol Police might be jumping the gun just a bit, don't you? Does it really take four months to build a stage? And if it does, is it absolutely necessary to close off the entire western side of the Capitol for four months? FOUR MONTHS??? To build a stage?!

The fencing extends across the entire lawn up to the steps. That means no one will be able to access the entire area until after the inauguration. And since the other side has been blocked off for years for construction of the mythical Capitol Visitor Center, that means the U.S. Capitol is now 100 percent enclosed in a protective bubble of plastic fencing.

Bah. Also note the Penn. Ave. roadwork. Wish they'd send work crews to fix the streets and sidewalks in other neighborhoods, too.

I don't mind the roadwork so much--at least that's mostly at night and is being done in small, manageable bits. What they're doing here is the equivalent of closing off all of Pennsylvania Avenue at once, months in advance, yet still doing it in small sections. There is absolutely no reason for this whole area to be blocked off, other than the fact that the police would love for it to be blocked off 24/7, 365 days a year and this is the next best thing.

I don't mind the roadwork and sidewalk rehab either...except that there are other neighborhoods that have been crumbling for a long time and haven't gotten any attention.

But Phil, it's Congress! They need more help than anyone. Remeber how those horrible lobbyist just threw themselves at the GOP, with all those bribes and easy women?! And there was nothing those poor defenseless Type A personalites could do to stop it! It was horrible; have pity on all those millionaires!

:O/

On the flipside, it's nice to see one of my rants about the insane security of this city in picture form...

assuming either presidential candidate who gets elected would actually want anything to do with the capitol as an ignauguration site...

Yes, way too far in advance. Just another frustrating part of the whole overzealous security mindset at work, always expanding the perimeters, putting up more barriers. It's unsightly, unbecoming of a great and free nation, and when you get right down to it, ineffective and an inefficient use of resources.
