Koala Meditating (The ultimate koala photo?)

awww...cute little bugger!
Koala Meditating (The ultimate koala photo?) by Erik K Veland.
Koalas are amazing. They can sit on the tiniest of branches and practically sleep anywhere! It is also most of what they do all they to be honest. As you can imagine, sleeping with a stick up your ass can't be very comfortable, yet these cute teddy bears manage to ignore that and sleep blissfully.

This adorably cute sleeping koala was shot in Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, QLD, Australia

Learn about Koalas:
The Koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is a thickset arboreal marsupial herbivore native to Australia, and the only extant representative of the family Phascolarctidae.
The Koala is found in coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia, from near Adelaide to the southern part of Cape York Peninsula. Populations also extend for considerable distances inland in regions with enough moisture to support suitable woodlands. The Koalas of South Australia were largely exterminated during the early part of the 20th century, but the state has since been repopulated with Victorian stock. The Koala is not found in Tasmania or Western Australia.

Koala on Wikipedia

Contrary to (un)popular belief: A koala is NOT a bear!

The US Government have declared the koala a threatened species, however the Australian Government has not. A review of the species national conservation status concluded that the koala are not threatened at a national scale, with a population that numbers in the hundreds of thousands

As with most native Australian animals, the Koala cannot legally be kept as a pet in Australia without a permit.

Beautiful and unique capture. I think you've made all the right choices, from the lens to the crop. My only negative comment is on the blown out sky. The difficult thing is you may have had to choose one or the other, and you made the right choice when it comes to what to set your exposure for. You may try warming the picture up a bit and adjusting the brightness to bring it down. If you have photoshop, you could select the blown out areas with the lasso and tone them down as well (if they're salvageable).

Either way, nice shot.

I could sure go for a nice warm nap outside in the sun. It's -9 Celsius (15 Fahrenheit) outside and that's warm for some places in the US. I love the emotion of this shot.

Two great animal photos in a row. This one also has terrific details in the fur and great bokeh. It is a classic pose for a cute and cuddly looking animal at rest. Fantastic.

very sharp photo.
The koala is very nicely captured.
I find the bokeh a bit sharp, probably because of the F/4 aperture, but it doesn't detract much. If you could have opened up a bit more it would have been good, but obviously that's equipment dependant.
your exposure is dead on, and the image has nice contrast.

I'm also impressed by the amount of information you added.

you have captured all that is adorable about these marsupials in your koala study. i imagine it can't be easy to get a picture of them in action when they spend so much of their time in slumber. :)
i really like the angle you chose to shoot from - he reminds me of a little buddha.

if the choice was there i think i would have added a bit more of the tree trunk (branch) so that we would get a greater sense of his environment and the precarious perches they choose and their height.

very cute picture - how wonderful to be able to spend this kind of time with them

The first thing I thought when I saw this picture was "Man...I'm jealous of that Koala!" I'd love to be able to just catch a nap wherever and whenever I pleased.

As for the picture itself, it's wonderfully done. The first thing that I noted when looking at the picture was just how much detail was in the koala's fur, it's simply fantastic. From there I also got a sense of emotion from him as well, which is tough to do with a sleeping subject, but I started to think about all the things he must have done to have him pass out cold in such an odd spot (whether it's normal for them or not). Finally I really appreciate the nice bokeh in the background, it is just enough to keep the background from getting in the way of the subject, but not so much as to make you lose perspective of the environment.

I do see where heathaddley was coming from when they suggested to add more of the tree into the image, but I think that would actually take away from the obvious point of focus, which is the koala itself. As it stands, there isn't anything I would change about the shot. Nice work!

I also appreciated the small history lesson about the "bears". ;)
