White Breach

White Breach by erikogan.
People mock my 70-200/f2.8. They giggle, and even I admit that it looks like I'm overcompensating. But shots like this make it all worth it.

*drool* that is one nice shot.
Its very rare to see a humpack breach like this isnt it? Did you just get amazingly lucky??

I was on a whale watching trip in NZ recently and this was the best I could do:

Diving Down

I have the 70-200 f4 but I would have given my eye teeth for the 2.8 IS version on that trip...

We were incredibly lucky: we saw at least 30 breaches that day!

My 70-200/f2.8 predates the availability of IS, I originally bought it for my Elan IIe in the mid-1990's. In general I'm glad for that, since IS adds a full pound to an already hefty lens (and it comes at a pretty steep monetary cost, too). But a trip like this is the one case where I can see it really being worth it.

Oh, and to be fair, this image is actually cropped to accentuate the breach.

30 breaches!?!? That must have been awesome.

Yeah, I originally thought I would love a 28-300 L IS as ado-it-all lens but immediately dismissed it when I saw how heavy it was. I'm still trying to decide if the weight of a 70-200 f2.8L IS (not to mention the cost) is right for me. I really want to have a good long IS lens as I dont carry a tripod with me everywhere (not to mention its not always appropriate).

I've been whale watching on 3 Hawaiian islands and, while I've gotten to see a LOT of activity at times, I've never caught a great shot like this. In March in Kauai, a whale breached very close to our boat...and of course I was looking the OTHER WAY! (groan)
