Canon 5dMkII vs Nikon D700 @ 6400 ISO

Canon 5dMkII vs Nikon D700 @ 6400 ISO by erikgunnerud.
This is Canon 5dMkII vs Nikon D700 @ 6400 ISO, but the D700 is on full RAW and the 5D mkII is at highest jpeg. Both shot hot on f:2 This is not scientific. We just shot some frames at the same ISO so I know it could be much better. Its just to give you some idea.

Doesn't the 5D-2 have lots of options for noise reduction on jpegs? Which setting did you use?

I seriously have no idea. I was handed the camera. Took 30 frames at my own card and gave it away again. I didnt think I would be able to test it so I just shot some frames the two mins I had it. Didnt even intend to post, but figured more people would see. I would of course have done a more thorough test and checked the settings if I knew I was gonna be able to shot it a little, but I was just happy that I was able to use it for a moment.

The noise of the Canon are much more uniform (and incidently enough, look more film-like).

I have to disagree. I much prefer the way the D700 image looks; the black is more consistent and looks much less "blotchy" than the 5DII one.

I would assume that if you looked at the EXIF metadata it would tell you what settings the noise reduction was set on.

I could be wrong but it is worth a check.

Thats cool I can't wait to have this camera in my hands even though our economy is tanking.

I do agree that Nikon's D700 won in some of the comparisons. But Edscoble brought up a good point, the 5D II does look like film grain vs. digital grain. And as said before 21MP Jpg vs. 12MP RAW at random angles, and hand held. Too many variables.

I love both cameras though, I recently talked my friend into getting the D700. As long as both can handle near flawless ISO 3200 I'm pretty much set, because that's beyond my expectations x4.

@edscoble are you saying the right image looks more uniform? because i thinkt he d700 on the left is more uniform... in any case, the performance for a 21mp camera is pretty great. frankly though, there's a reason why i went with the 700 over the now announced mk2.

I see the Canon is more uniform because the Nikon have big blouch of grain particualy in black, while the Canon one is the same regardless of the colour/area.

I mean look at the LCD on both picture, the Nikon look a bit messy compared to the tidy canon.

edited - whoop, I thought the left is Canon and right is Nikon, was misguided by the description.

Looking into the shade, 5D2's noise is not smooth at all.

Both cameras do incredible things that were previously never dreamed of by photographers. The noise on that D700 does not look like the noise I get with my D3. But I turn NR off when shooting RAW. Final thought is that there is more detail in the D700 image. But that might be the difference between the compressed JPG and the RAW file.

I don't know if people referring to the weird botchy noise on the 5D MKII picture are talking about that top left corner.

If that's what you mean, I think its a finger print smudge or something visible at the difference in angle.

Yeah I agree, this is not scientific so all this really shows me is that both cameras take usable photos at ISO6400. From other samples I've seen on the web (http://www.dphotojournal.com/canon-5d-mark-2 -review-sample-photos-user-manual/ ... scroll down halfway and download the high ISO shots), Canon seems to carry on the tradition of high chroma noise in their high ISO shots. The ISO25600 shot is very blotchy even AFTER all the noise reduction that has been applyed to the shot. I've noticed that the D700 eliminates chroma noise quite nicely after applying NR.

The D700 shot is underexposed , just look at the grey background and you'll see about a stop less exposure than in the 5d shots. This comparison is worthless unless both shots have equal exposure.

The D700 is correct exposed. The 5D is over exposed. The comparison is worthless even if both had been correct exposed. Its just to give people an idea. Not to tell right and wrong. You can see that its mentioned in the description under the pics and several other places. ;-)

This is nowhere near a concrete test, anyone who judges the two systems based on this test is a flipping moron. What lens on the d700, what lens on the 5D? What are the details on the lenses? What're the settings, the picture modes, what're the shutter speeds, the EV comps?

Without that information, without a solid piece of the same lens (virtually impossible, unless you use 3rd party) then this test is worthless.

A lot of people don't realize that nikon's NR software takes away the original color and underexposes by 1 1/3 of a stop for any shot that it sees as being properly exposed. Canon relinquishes the color and picture quality of the original image and has one of the best light meters in the prosumer world of DSLRs. It clearly wins this debate that the mark II 5D is superior to the d700, especially considering it has 21 mpx compared to the 12 of the d700, that's phenomenal

But...That alone should tell you that the 5D mark II is superior, because it can handle the same amount of noise for double the space ! However, far from concrete, this test gets 1/10 rating

The Canon image is much sharper and you can really see the detail. The Nikon image has a warmer feel but the detail is washed.

Well, to me both look good. The Nikon seems to have less Chroma noise and is maybe a bit more even (in grain). The Canon seems sharper (look at the Canon Logo etc.).

Both are very, very good and blind brand loyalty wars are just stupid. If you have a Canon, don't automatically say Nikon is worse (and visa-versa).

I happen to have a Canon, but I purposely ignored the titles on the picture (which show which camera it comes from) when making up my own mind.

you can't compare a raw image to a jpeg which runs NR on the photo. try jpeg vs jpeg then you'll see a huge difference.

also Karl, you should look into Nikon's matrix metering system before you cling to your beloved "best light meter in the prosumer world of DSLRs" — Several Canonites will agree that it's better.

and regarding the actual test again, the one on the left (the D700) looks prettier, and of course, the Canon — is much sharper....
but check out the angle. the 5D shot is straight on, while the D700 is shooting at an angle, making the details look distorted due to the depth.
