Eric 22 with Albertina Francisco

Albertina is my hero. this woman rose up to create a clean source of water for her entire village. I was so overwhelmed by her courage and power that I was hugging and loving all over her during my tour of the village.

patient at TB hospital

I visited a TB ward deep in the countryside of Mozambique that had been set up in a big, beautiful church. Despite having this terrible disease (sometimes a precursor to AIDS), the people had great hope in their eyes. I was overwhelmed by this. I was concerned about this man, who looked forlorn, but we spoke to him (through a translator) and he was doing just fine "getting some sun." The resplendent hope of the Mozambiquans bowled me over and stays with me to this day.

This, right here, is emblematic of my belief that empowering marginalized women and girls will unlock the greatest good our world has ever seen. Just look into her eyes. Think there is ANYTHING she cannot do, if just given a choice -- and a chance? That is what makes CARE's work so important.

One of my favorite shots of all time. These people have next to nothing, yet look into their eyes. Healthy, radiant faces full of hope and full of life. I left a big piece of my heart with these people. (See the boy on the left, not looking at the camera, but at me? He had been following me around all day spellbound by this strange person. He just watched me and mimicked what I did the entire time. It was precious.)

From the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed, a woman's work is never done. We were there to learn about Tanya's life. The photographers wanted to just take pictures. I wanted to get in there and help! Notice the beautiful boy on her back. He was so well-behaved through all of this work!
