SF, the goatee was ruined by Stalin. You and I just haven't figured that out yet. :-)
Winold Reiss was a WPA artist who did some great iconic work though less jingoistic and more labor oriented. You can see some examples here:

Hmmm... you think sitting at a computer and writing status reports would count as "conquering the Land of Tomorrow"? I mean someone has to keep track of progress...
;)
(Superb shot, btw)

Heh, that reminds me of the Calvin and Hobbes comic where they debate why superheroes always fight crime, and never engage in more normal behavior, like letters to their congressman, or attending town meetings. "Quick, to the Bat-Fax!"

LOL! I love Calvin & Hobbes... I haven't seen the strip you are talking about, but that's definitely something they'd talk about!

i found this first on jpg. it certainly got my vote. brilliant, brilliant, brilliant image. i will probably be the only one with a flag i have the stomach to say yes to.
i think your use of the low angle and the desaturated tones lends to an almost propaganda feeling - a la world war two era. it's classic. nice job man.
