You just get better.
I love the choppiness, muted colours and
the depth of field... oh, and Moo's
expression!

yea this is superb - love the blur effect on
the depth objects, the clarity in the
expressions is accentuated massively because
of it.

DragonDrop ...say it loud and there's music playing,
say it soft and its almost like praying...
:-s
jimmytofu thanks, this one was quite tough to put
together for reasons i cant quite figure....
hansbrinker a remarkably succinct compliment, thanks
man!
cmndrfoggy thankyou :)
mommy peace this is probably one of my own favourites
too now... like tofu says moo's expression
just blew me away... i asked her what she was
doing... and she reminded me, in no uncertain
terms, that it was HER camera i was using!! i
was in trouble....

Daren, this is superb.
Do the people around you ever get to see
your face? It seems to always have a camera
stuck in front of it!

'Mac' [pM looks around the room, confused by
hearing his real name]......thanks very kind
of you to say so.
as for the (my daughter's) camera covering
my face thing, i'm sure some people feel they
see too much of my face...lol but i guess i
have been a little obsessed with the
technique... tbh a lot of this is about
filling in time whilst waiting for something,
it makes a change from doodling in my
sketchbook ... this for eg... most of the
compo shots were done whilst sitting alone at
the table, i then populated it with a handful
of shots of each person as and when they came
back from the queue to the table...

Ah, I see. I had visions of you with some
makeshift camera/helmet type thing strapped
to the front of your head, enabling you to
take pictures whilst carrying on as normal
;-)
I think I may have too vivid an
imagination!
Anyway, still a fantastic shot. Your
efforts have inspired me to have a go at this
technique myself, although I'm sure my
attempts will be nowhere near as good as
yours.
Any tips? I only own film cameras, so all
my layering wil be done on the floor in front
of me!

'Mac' you are too kind, its just the advantage of
digital, i'll discard about a 1000% of the
photos i take, the law of averages gives that
if you take a million digital photos a
handful of them are bound to be ok. with a
bit of PS processing they can be quite good.
But thanks, i appreciate the compliment.
the only 'tip' i can think to say at the
moment, and this is one i keep passing out,
is that it is the total image that is
important, not the technique... i get quite
irritated by some 'official' groups (actually
just one) that preaches particular methods
which focus on the process of construction
and seem to blatantly forget that an image
should be interesting beyond that... but
having visited your Photostream a few times, its clear that you dont need
any help there (lovely btw). I just pick a
target/scene and shoot everything in my
eyeline and then an extra 20%... which is all
very well with digital, with film you'll have
to be slightly more selective i
guess....There is someone who you could ask
though (about 'real' film constructs) the
only other Paint Monkey on Flickr ( who has become something of a
mate of mine and takes some stunning
pictures) has done a marvellous piece here , which i think is just brilliant and makes
me realise that real photography takes talent
and that i too should get a 'real' one on the
go... cant wait to see what you come up with
:)
when you do, we should start a group
exclusively for film composites...i'm off to
buy some film now....

Thanks for the tips (and the complement).
That Paint Monkey's stuff is rather lovely.
I only shoot film, and only get to use a
computer at work at the moment, so obviously
Photoshop is a no-no for the time being.
Although on Monday I won a laptop in the
Times sudoku competition - woo hoo! So things
are looking up :-)
As it is I'm more computer divvy than
computer savvy, so I've got a steep learning
curve ahead of me.
Thinking about it I may invest in a cheapo
digital camera just so I don't spend a
fortune in wasted film. It may prove more
cost effective in the long run.

absolutely! i only use cheapo digicams as it
is, the most expensive one i have only cost
Santa £139... but usually they're either
freebies or under £30... its kinda why i
started with the montage thing in the first
place....
and congrats on the lappy and being clever
at soduko... :)
in other news.. the Random Access Memory
project (carrier bags of old film prints) has
unearthed some old mini montages... i'm about
to construct them.....they're quite
uninspired but...
