All Legs

All Legs

While recently on vacation in Maui, my dad and I got out three mornings to photograph the endangered Hawaiian stilt. I loved watching and shooting these birds. Though there are only about 1,500 of these birds remaining, we were able to see them in numbers in a couple of different locations and get close enough to them in nice light for some exciting photography.

Shooting these long legged birds was a great exercise in playing with shapes (of the legs) and reflections. It became apparent in review of the photos that the position of the subject stilt's legs made or wrecked the image. I filled all my cards three mornings in a row, so a few more stilt photos may find their way to my photo stream. Thanks for looking!

Jekyll and Hyde Sky

Jekyll and Hyde Sky

On my last morning in Maui this past Tuesday, my dad and I caught a beautiful sky, lit with high wispy clouds, but also including drama from some lower and heavy clouds. Standing knee deep in warm turquoise water early in the morning while it snowed in Portland was so sweet and comfortable. It was my first time anywhere tropical, and hopefully not the last.

The only I can complain about in Maui was the internet speed, thus I was not commenting on photo streams as I would like to. Thanks so much for looking and have a great weekend!

Ridgefield NWR Sunrise

Ridgefield NWR Sunrise

My happy place. Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge at morning's first light. This was taken on a couple of weeks ago with my friend Bruce. Pretty light and great birding made for an excellent day (more photos to come). Thanks for looking, and have a great weekend!

Pulled Toward The Last Light

Pulled Toward The Last Light

For those who live in the Pacific Northwest, this is clearly Cannon Beach's Haystack Rock. A gorgeous place a don't get to nearly often enough, especially considering I only live 80 minutes away.

I follow the work of many terrific photographers in the northwest whose coastal scenes I envy greatly, whose work I admire so much, and who clearly inspired this photo.

On the night I shot this, I was glad to run into Gary Loveless, whose beautiful work from the Oregon Coast is certainly worth a look.

The three towers along the southwest waterfront in Portland, taken from OHSU. I really didn't like this image until I played with it Silver Effex 2, but it's grown on me since then. Have a great weekend and thanks for looking!
