I am pretty surprised myself to find them growing here. The summers here are similar to the warmer areas of San Francisco -- overcast/fog in the morning and not very warm even when the sun comes out. But, like San Francisco and the coast, there is little frost. So bananas and other tropical and frost-sensitive plants survive. This banana is at the southwest corner of the building, so it gets a reasonable amount of sun.
