My dad at work. It was taken at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia in 1979. My dad was 28 years old (I was 2). He was a Captain in the USAF sitting in an F-15A, a 20 million dollar aircraft at the time. The tank held 660 gallons of fuel. The hole on the jet to left side of the picture is the gun. It held 20 millimeter bullets and could shoot 6000 rounds a minute. The tripod beneath the gun is holding a camera. He says it was used for "bore-sighting." When the gun was shot at a berm (a sand wall) 100 yards away, the camera looked at the result and they adjusted the gun to make it as accurate as possible. He says the jet weighed between 50-60 thousand lbs.
