The Men's Restroom at the Madonna Inn

The Men's Restroom at the Madonna Inn by emdot.

The Discovery Channel has declared it so, so it must be so: My town is home to the world's best men's restroom. But of course we already knew that. The Men's Room at the Madonna Inn has a "waterfall" flush and somehow coaxes everybody who visits to go in and check it out, regardless of gender or age. Which makes you wonder... with all those people prancing in to check it out, does it ever get used? (No photos please).

Discovery Channel's Best Bathrooms IN THE WORLD. THE WHOLE WORLD. Probably the WHOLE UNIVERSE.

I'm just saying...

Discovery.com: Mr. Madonna, designer of the men's room, first sketched out his masterpiece on a napkin.

So there he is: a rowdy bar, way past midnight, chatting up this woman, when suddenly: "I got it! Excuse me ..Jessica(?), I have to... ah, do you have a pen?"

Hey Cerise -- I can only imagine what this must have been like for a little kid. Ha. There's a SLO County flickr group if you want to join and share any pics you may have.

inoneear -- you gotta check out the rooms at this place. take your gaudiest thought and muliply it by 100,000. The restaurants are all pink and gold with an extra dose of filigree.

BUT -- they have the best chocolate cake anywhere.

Sweet baby Jesus.. I.. you just made my ascetic, Scandinavian sense of style curl up in a corner and cry in fear - Monster! ;-)

That chocolate cake had better be able to raise the dead. We're talking 'Triple Lazarus Chocolate Goodness'.

For me, what is most scary about the Madonna Inn is that the owners don't appear to think anything is odd about the inn.

They are/were the most well-known people in our town, probably. Alex Madonna died a few months ago and the town went Pink Crazy. Every store had pink window displays, a lot of people wore pink for a few days and his funeral procession when right through the middle of downtown like a parade with people lining the streets to watch it and pay respects.

Yet, they remain highly controversial.

emdot, at my uni we went through a period of having spontaneous "bathroom concerts" in the men´s room of the main cafeteria at 10 p.m. on friday nights (there was a snack bar in the basement that was open, which is how we got in).

granted, we did the music in a slightly separated part of the restroom, but we were amazed at how many men used the urinals with 20 or more people--half of them women--able to look on.

almost as many men came in, saw the people, and walked out, of course.

LOL, That is the hotel after James Lilek's own heart! Those are some frightning rooms. Especially the Yosemite room, which reminds me more of a bear cave than Yosemite. The Ravens, OH the Ravens and pigeons!

(Edit: thinking about the snowballing horror film motif, I think it probably all starts with champer's distressing state... Maybe if I put that behind me, I'll get back to loving pretty em's parade of darling shots. *grin*)

Heh, biggest newspaper in Sweden just ran a travel article about the Madonna Inn, "Farout, kitschy, and ugly" (in Swedish, sporting an interview with Per Gessle of Swedish popduo Roxette. Apparently, they shot a music video at the inn back in 2001, using a dozen of the rooms. Sounded like they dug the place too.).

I spotted an image on their start page and went "Now where have I seen this [in this instance: funhouse of horrors] before?" The answer -- as it often is: emdot's flickrstream.
