treebones yurt cabins in big sur
** I did not take this photo **
Yardsale Dan just sent me an email. He and his gf were traipsing up and down the big sur coastline over the three-day weekend and he saw this place and thought of me. I love yurts! I love Big Sur! Hence, this is my new idyllic place to stay in Big Sur.
Okay, okay, so in all reality, Ventana and Post Ranch are still my epitome of Big Sur Dreamtime, but the yurts might be more in my budget. :)

Oh nice, I love yurts, too. My favourite yoga class ever was one I taught in a yurt. Yurt yoga rocks. Em- let's get together and buy one. ;-)

kannach -- yes, i have. they are very round. ;)
pamela -- and dog friendly. :)

I have been trying to plan a getaway to Tree Bones for about 2 months now.
maybe once this "flickr" job dies down, I'll be able to make it down there.
oh wait...will it *ever* die down ? :)

Am I the only one out here who sees what's going on? That's obviously an alien spacecraft, and of course it would land around Big Sur. I've seen the crew! Look here

two things (one for saying aloud):
yurt-oo! cute
the_nannish_one (97 months ago | reply)
I gotta admit, this one is really neat. I wouldn't mind that for the summer.
chadmiller (97 months ago | reply)
Yurts rock. This past weekend, I watched one being put together at a SCA tournament.

I lived in a ger for a week once and was astonished at how comfortable and practical it was. I suspect being set up overlooking the ocean at Big Sur would improve on the experience considerably.
Saffanna (97 months ago | reply)
Very serene.

i think there's some guy out here that teaches advanced yoga in a yurt - i think it's called "yogurt".
Douglas Roesch (97 months ago | reply)
Had no idea what a yurt was 'till I saw this photo. Now I want one. :) Beautiful shot.
Shepherd (97 months ago | reply)

My name is Burt and I live in a Yurt. I dress all in fur and I live at Big Sur.

Wow -- step away from Flickr for a few hours and everyone is hanging out in the yurt, sipping beer and swapping coastal yoga (i mean yogurt) stories.
I'm sensing a Yurt Resurgence. A yurtsurgence. The wave of the future: circular tent housing.
Perhaps now that Flickr is Cali based we can have the Mother of All Meet Ups in the Sur. We can circle the Yurts up like the Covered Wagons of yore. Bosque'll make the campfire.
No -- Shepherd will make the campfire. Bosque'll bang the drum. :) JB'll lead the yogurt and Lianne will be the first student. Chad'll show us how to build the yurts. Kimmers will pull out the trusty flute and lead the fireants away like the Pied Piper. Dr. H will be flashing morse code messages to the space crafts with a pocket mirror. Bean will yodel. Greg will spin campfire stories. Deroesh will take glorious interior shots of the yurt, focusing on the fabulous sky light. Saffanna will breathe in deep, relaxing breaths. Nan'll bring extra clothes cuz she'll be staying all summer. Fishlamp'll be bringing even more cuz he's moving in! Pamela will introduce us all to Unica (best pooch in the world). Kannach will speak what he will claim to be English, but his Scottish brogue will be so thick we'll just smile politely and pour him more beer.
And Jspaw -- we will all cross our fingers for him that things will mellow out and he'll get a weekend away from our favorite company in the entire world.
Okay, that was stretching. But thanks everyone for the great comments.
And do think about the Mother of All Meet Ups.... It'd be fun. :)
Shepherd (97 months ago | reply)
ya promised a road trip, all you have to do is pick me up. I'm in if there is beer.
emdot (97 months ago | reply)
Sheppy -- you live in the opposite direction. I bet Bodhi'll pick you up on the way out, tho. :)
Shepherd (97 months ago | reply)
ahh darn (edited), so much fer promises. Speaking of avocados. :)
REALJimBob (97 months ago | reply)
wow... I didn't even know what a yurt was until I saw this. The do look purty though, can I come to?
emdot (97 months ago | reply)
JimBob -- you can come. We need someone to man the binocs, watching for whales. :)

Whales? In Montana?
dusted (97 months ago | reply)
I want some of what you guys are smoking. Great shot, emdot!
fishlamp [deleted] (97 months ago | reply)
This whole comment thread is just too cool for words... fun!
Big Al Davies [deleted] (97 months ago | reply)
No one wondered how hard it is to buy furniture for these places.
emdot (97 months ago | reply)
Tunnel -- Montana was the other ocean pic.
Big Al -- I did!
Tunnel is to bring the GPS. Dusted will be sent to Willow Creek to rustle up some stone pipes. Fishlamp can make dinner. And Al's got first dibs on the porch rocker.
Linus Gelber (97 months ago | reply)
You know, if we can fit a trapeze in there I know a girl who -- uh, never mind.
GPS says second to the right and straight on til morning.
lotusutol (97 months ago | reply)
lol! what fun you're conjuring up m.... Big Sur, yurt, ger... didn't know these words existed!
/me writes them down in mental library for future 'Upwords' challenges.
Tiggywinkle (97 months ago | reply)
I knew a guy in the SCA who had a yurt. It wasn't nearly as cool as this one, but it was pretty cool. Great for hanging out in with good friends as night turned into early morning. :)
Mostly you furnish them with furs and big pillows and other soft stuff, with the occasional chest or low table so you have somewhere stable to put your goblet or tankard down. Pass the beer, I'm in!
emdot (97 months ago | reply)
Lotusutol will keep the all important Treebones journal. Tiggy will lounge on the pillows and swill bourbon. And/or beer.
Big Al Davies [deleted] (97 months ago | reply)
But circular Wardrobes?
emdot (97 months ago | reply)
did i not mention? we're all naked?
okay. not really.
wardrobes/closets... your mind is very thorough al. i'm guessing there is some wasted curve space behind the straight-backed armoirs.
Big Al Davies [deleted] (97 months ago | reply)
Why do I picture a Steffe pic of all the collage squad naked in a room with circular furniture. How do you sit in the corner in here to sulk?
emdot (97 months ago | reply)
sulking not allowed al. but drinking is. tigg'll share the booze.
abolghasem ghasemi (97 months ago | reply)

I just stayed at Treebones last week - it was wonderful - it feels like camping, only with a Queen sized bed and plenty of space for your head...
chadmiller (93 months ago | reply)
Naked?! Somebody better bring mosquito repellent.
emdot (93 months ago | reply)
floresita -- very cool. did you take photos? are they in your stream? Quick! everyone! out of the yurt and straight to foresita's stream. :)
chad, i heard skin-so-soft by avon is the gold standard.
floresita (93 months ago | reply)
Hi emdot, why as a matter of fact I did take pictures. Here's the sunset I saw just outside of my yurt:
And here are some beautiful mountains just a little down the road:
Not too shabby!
trail trekker (85 months ago | reply)
Now THAT is the kind of shelter a backpacker like me would love to find at the end of the trail. If somehow I could bring one half-way up Salmon Creek this year I'd never leave.......
fishlamp [deleted] (85 months ago | reply)
The yurt! I had almost forgotten about the yurt! I love the yurt!
Caesar_X (81 months ago | reply)
I didn't know they had yurts in Big Sur. Thanks for letting me know! My fiance and I stayed in a yurt a few weeks ago on Vancouver Island and it was amazing.

Dreamy photo! Thanks for using a creative commons license. I've used the photo on a blog post about yurts.
emdot (73 months ago | reply)
hi terriem. ;) actually, i didn't take the photo -- so it's not mine. please don't credit me. it's from the treebones web site. :)
thanks for the comments, all. ;)

Hi emdot - sorry, I see that now -- I've replaced it with another photo where the rights usage is more clear. Thanks for letting me know!
emdot (73 months ago | reply)
sure! we're going to big sur next weekend, so your post inspired me to go see if there were any openings at treebones! we might camp there. :)
