:10 Things: Grammy's Glass

:10 Things: Grammy's Glass by Elizabeth Taylor.
Every month, on the last page of Domino magazine (my latest design porn) they have a piece called "Ten Things that Make Me Happy", where one of the designers featured in that issue lists ten things. It's a great place to find new crap, but it's also a nice little meditation to practice.

For the last year or so, I've been writing down "10 Great Things About Today" before I go to sleep. Not every night, but most nights. Most of the time it's things like "peanut butter & jelly" or "beautiful weather" or "my cat rocks" or "flickr". But sometimes it's things like "first kiss" or "best friend".

I've been wanting to do a visual diary of this, so here it is.

When my dad's parents passed away and we cleaned out the house that we had all spent so many hours of our lives, peeling away the layers of years and memories, one thing that no one else seemed to want was all of Grammy's glassware. Dessert plates, vases, pickle dishes.

I ended up with most of it and this is by far my favorite piece. Not sure if it's a parfait glass or bud vase, but now it sits on my desk filled with silver thumbtacks and a pack of BlackJack gum from Kerri's wedding.

What a wonderful memory to have of your Grammy. Cool glass piece, too!

I know I mentioned it earlier, but your 10 Great Things is such a fantastic idea!

Thanks, ladies. I wish I had more than just one of these.

I'm hoping to do this every month, Kerri. A little exercise in the little things....

Divine glass!! I have some similar ones from my great aunt & uncle. Correct me if I'm wrong doogs but I think the design is hobnail, you've got a beauty.

Beautiful glass!

I've also heard of it referred to as: hobnail, Fenton art glass and milk glass. My mom has a ton of this stuff, not only in white but in pink and blue, too. I prefer the white, though.

Oh, I'm learning so much! Thanks, Jennifer. I wish I had a ton of it, now. And agreed...I so much prefer the white. The colored ones start to get borderline....

Love almost every photo in this series. this one in particular caught my eye not only because of the angle you shot it, and the gorgeous glass texture ... but because I have a similar piece I shot a year ago in July '05. Although it's not transluscent like yours, the shape and texture are very similar. It's here.

thanks so much, montana. i've always known that opaque white glass to be called milk glass. we had a bunch in my family growing up, it seems. i recall it in the homes of most of my extended family. Lots of lamps and serving bowls, if i recall correctly.
